Veteran catcher impressed by Alex Cobb’s first start: Guardians takeaways

The Guardians activated Cobb before the second game of Friday’s day-night doubleheader. Lefty Anthony Gose was designated for assignment to make room for him on the 26 and 40-man rosters.Cobb threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on 80 pitches. He had a 3-2 lead and two out in the fifth when Matt Wallner hit his 3-0 pitch into the right field seats for a three-run homer as the Twins completed the doubleheader sweep with a 6-3 win.

Cobb allowed an unearned run in the second on a throwing error by shortstop Brayan Rocchio. The other three runs came with two out in the fifth. He also induced the Twins to ground into three double plays. The Guardians acquired Cobb from the Giants just before the July 30 trade deadline. Friday was his first start this year. He was sidelined until Friday because of surgery on his left hip.Steven Kwan entered Saturday’s game in a 9 for 42 skid. Manager Stephen Vogt said he’s been dealing with some minor injuries based on playing every day.
