Agricultural tech unicorn Plenty plans to close what was once its largest indoor vertical farm.

Agricultural tech unicorn Plenty Unlimited Inc., which seeks to tap new produce growth efficiencies with its sprawling indoor vertical farms, plans to close one of its largest local farms in South San Francisco that's also served as the company's headquarters.

Plenty stated in recently filed state notices it plans to cease operations at 590 Ecles Ave. in January and begin group layoffs starting with 18 employees before full closure of its South San Francisco site in March 2023. The so-called Tigris production facility will close"in advance of the anticipated full closure of current South San Francisco location," indicating a potential headquarters relocation could be imminent.

Plenty was not immediately available for comment on Wednesday morning but I'll update this story if I hear back. Per the layoff notice, Plenty anticipates cutting additional employees beyond the initial round of 18 corresponding to farm operation roles. As of Dec. 1, the company had 416 employees, according to PitchBook.has more than 200,000 square feet of indoor space in South San Francisco but used only a small portion for the produce it sells through outlets such as Good Eggs, with most of the site portioned out for testing and research and development.
