VENICE, Italy - The world’s oldest film festival kicks off in Venice on Wednesday with plenty of Hollywood stars and top filmmakers expected but a lack of female directors and the inclusion of controversial names has drawn criticism.

Polanski in 1977 pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in Los Angeles. The French-Polish director, 86, fled the United States for fear his deal with prosecutors would be overruled and he would get a lengthy prison term. He now lives in Europe. “There will be people who...don’t share the same opinion as mine but I don’t care too much in the sense that ...I like the movies, the only criteria I can use selecting a film is the quality of the film, or the film itself, and I don’t think that any other concerns should enter into the selection process.”

Looking forward to a new season of thoughtful, artistic, independent movies.

When admitted pedophile Polanski’s film is touted as best film. Bring on the awards!🤦‍♀️🤮

Тhis is some kind of paradox

Women encouraged to get off the couch and start directing movies.

kuku27 Quite interesting

Always a good disparity to complain about, it’s never talent or lack there of it’s always about sex or race or blah, blah, blah. If the work is great nothing will be able to hold it back

Include Venice Porn movies and it'll be on par.

The entertainment industry is now just a bastion of spoiled entitled buffoons .. nothing to see anymore

You all gonna make women do something they don’t want? If they won’t want to direct they won’t. If they’re not good at it then they won’t. Stop whining.
