THREAD: The nation’s biggest immunization rollout in history is facing pushback from an unlikely source: health care workers who witnessed COVID-19′s devastation firsthand but are refusing shots in surprising numbers.

“It’s far too low. It’s alarmingly low,” said Neil Pruitt, CEO of PruittHealth, which runs about 100 long-term care homes in the South, where fewer than 3 in 10 workers offered the vaccine so far have accepted it.

In Illinois, a big divide has opened at state-run veterans homes between residents and staff. The discrepancy was worst at the veterans home in Manteno, where 90% of residents were vaccinated but only 18% of the staff members. Oregon doctor Noble said he will wait until April or May to get the shots. He said it is vital for public health authorities not to overstate what they know about the vaccines. That is particularly important, he said, for Black people like him who are distrustful of government medical guidance because of past failures and abuses, such as the infamous Tuskegee experiment.

“There’s vaccine available but it’s literally sitting in freezers,” said Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey. “That’s unacceptable. We have lives to save.” SavaSeniorCare has offered cash to the 169 long-term care homes in its 20-state network to pay for gift cards, socially distanced parties or other incentives. But so far, data from about a third of its homes shows that 55% of workers have refused the vaccine.

The hesitation isn’t surprising, given the mixed message from political leaders and misinformation online, said Dr. Wilbur Chen, a professor at the University of Maryland who specializes in the science of vaccines.

Rec’d dose2.As a healthcare worker higher risk to be exposed, I can: 1-take my chances-no vaccine. If I lose & infected, I infect my children spouse coworkers etc& never know how they will react.2-vaccine.Take a chance on science. I’d rather me than those I love. It’s easy💉

if you are in direct patient care and won’t get vaccinated then u can go work in the kitchen. or dump trash. you shouldn’t have any contact with patients. the ignorance is shocking

Wow from the WHO - looks like Ivermectin could beat the vaccine easily on mortality. Is this not huge? 🤔 WHO preliminary review confirms Ivermectin effectiveness

Because as bad as it is the front line workers are seeing the advanced age of the people who are actually dying. If they were seeing people in their 30’s and 40’s pass away they would be taking it and risk any side effect IMO.

There are 2 polarized views about the vaccine, those who want it & those who don’t. Is there a common ground? I believe yes! We should devise a set of criteria's & those who do meet the criteria should get it, for the safety of all! DrMingWang

Cool I can I get theirs? I’m most likely going to have to wait until the fall since I’m youngish and heathy & I have no problem waiting my turn so that the elderly and essential workers get theirs 1st but if they don’t want them I’ll gladly take their spot

For every healthcare worker that refuses the vaccine, one healthy person who would have to wait until the end of the queue should take their place.

Wtf would a healthcare worker know about a vaccine anyway...

These people have been told vaccines were made from aborted babies and not placental cord stem cells. Pro lifers won't take it with cells from aborted babies. My wife in all live births had given to research placental cord, stem cells, placenta to use in just such need in Ohio.

Their knowledge of science is limited to what they do.

It’s the same health workers who see the damage other vaccines can do. Let’s not forget that

“We stayed at work for you now you stay home for us”

GraduatedBen May God bless the health care workers who are refusing 🙏 Now is the time to say no. Otherwise they will force them on us every year

GraduatedBen Because said 'devastation' is FAKE made up nonsense and they know it LOL

Shocking

t5monkey In America

Could be a few reasons 1) some already had it or believe they were exposed, so why rush to get a jab 2) people under 50 realize there is little risk from covid so they are in no rush 3) some are antivaxers 4) some are not antivax but feet long term effects

GraduatedBen I have a female cousin, her and her husband are both nurses and aren't getting it because they want to have another kid and are worried about genetic side effects

Maybe they already had it and want others, who never had it and thus have no immunity, to get the shot 🤷🏼‍♂️

They see the danger. Or not. They make an assessment. That is their choice. They don’t think that this is a killer virus. Hence they prefer the virus over the vaccine.

They are welcome to refuse. They only have to give others the shots...

I thought mask work? So now you suggest they don't. I guess not. Seems most of the folk getting the China bug are wearing them and are mostly in lockdown areas.

Turn the antivirus over to the military to give. It is a mistake to turn it to nurses. Two diagnoses are attracted to nursing--OCPD and borderline. They both screw things up. If you can get a group of nurses without one of these PDs, you can fly.

If they do not want it, stop wasting your time. Roll out their vaccine to those that do want it. Darwin has a way of taking care of people like this.

Then get them to elderly people who actually want them, for goodness sake.

Then get out of the way, and let me have it

Irresponsibility. Plain and simple. I'd get the shot tomorrow if I knew I was allowed to get it. The fact people are turning it down is nonsense.

Talk about being in the wrong line of work. Do they need to be told to wash their hands?

Move aside then, I'll take it.

If they aren’t I’m sure as hell not!!

Some hospital and nursing home administrators have dangled everything from vouchers for free breakfasts to a raffle for a car to straight cash payouts to get employees to roll up their sleeves.
