One day after having most charges dropped against pro-Palestine protestors at the University of Texas at Austin, some students and community members are demanding the rest of the charges be dismissed. A group of those arrested on April 29 say there should be no attempt to distinguish between good and bad protestors and they want the Travis County Attorney to do more to protect their right to free speech .
“I want to emphasize that these cases only involve individuals charged with criminal trespasses on April 29 on the South Lawn at the UT campus. These do not involve any other offenses and those remain pending in our office,” said Garza. “While Garza’s actions are a step in the right direction, it’s not enough,” said Zoey who is not a UT student but was arrested during the April 29 protest. “While there was momentary relief with the criminal trespassing charges being dropped, we are a unit. We were all there on the same day. We were all arrested for the same reason. So, the fact they are continuing to pursue charges against some of us was very disappointing.
Rachel is a UT student who had her criminal trespass charge dropped on Wednesday. She says she could still face disciplinary action from the university.
