US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says Washington deeply troubled by reports of China harassing families of Uighur Muslim activists

Uighurs and their supporters protest in front of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations in New York on March 15, 2018.

"In some cases, these abuses occurred shortly after meetings with senior State Department officials," Pompeo said in a statement, reiterating Washington's call for Beijing to release those detained. China has denied any mistreatment of Uighurs, and insists Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region is its internal affair.
