. Wan, regardless of whether he’s working with a budget of $200 million or $1.5 million has never lacked for ambition. If the set-up in which a young woman, Madison Mitchell , is tormented by a figure named Gabriel with ties to her childhood seemed too easy for someone of Wan’s caliber, that’s because it is.
The third act discovery by Madison’s sister, Sydney that Gabriel is not a supernatural figure, or Madison’s imaginary friend given form, but a parasitic twin that physicians cut down to size and buried in Madison’s skull as a child is absolute insanity. Coupled with the fact that Gabriel’s brainwaves can manipulate electricity and cause Madison to hallucinate, and there’s some real next-level shit going on here.
RICHARDLNEWBY Really enjoyed reading this one
Always great to read his work here. For me the irony is that Wan-influenced Saw torture porn flicks turned me off horror: now this is a cap on a great summer of FUN horror like Fear Street, Freaky, Werewolves Within.
I saw it & thought the story was too far-fetched & the effects weren’t anything special. I didn’t like it. 🤷🏻♀️
I’ve come to the conclusion hearing a horror movie is polarizing essentially guarantees I’ll love it
Great write-up on a very entertaining yet polarising movie… something I expected from a popular horror blog and not from a medium like THR. You did well this time 👍
The third act as a complete mess. I guess for some that is a positive but I just didn't see it that way. Did not like....
