The University of California is suing the Trump administration over a new rule that forces international college students to attend in-person classes in order to avoid deportation

in lawsuits filed against the federal government over the matter so far. UC is home to more than 27,000 undergraduate international students and nearly 14,000 international graduate students.

“As part of our effort to respond to Covid-19 and to protect the health of all our students, UC has increased online instruction and decreased in-person classes," UC Board of Regents Chair John A. Pérez said in a statement Wednesday. "Even last-ditch efforts can cause real harm, so it is imperative for UC to file this lawsuit in order to protect our students."

"To UC's international students, I say: ‘We support you and regret the additional chaos ICE's action has caused,’" he said. "To the courts, I say, ‘We are the University of California. UC knows science, UC knows law, and we approach both in good faith. Our opponents have shown you time and again that they do not.’"

The suit will seek a temporary restraining order and preliminary and permanent injunctive relief to bar ICE from enforcing the order, UC said in its release. This is the second time UC has sued over federal immigration policies impacting students. In 2017, the university system successfully sued over the revocation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, championed by outgoing UC President Janet Napolitano, who served as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security under former President Barack Obama. In a statement, Napolitano called the ICE order "mean-spirited, arbitrary and damaging to America.

Justice4allCQ Pack your shit, international students. See you when and if these colleges EVER open again.

Go for it! In advance you lose😂

It’s not 1 school, it’s 9.

I agree! Vote

Student visas are for students attending classes. If you are doing only online courses, why DO they need to live in the US. The problem is, tuition rates can’t vary for in-state, out-of-state, or international students if they are all attending the same way. It’s about $$$$

Distraction, distraction, distraction!.......These are just distractions to keep the media off of the other scandals!

Yes!!! UCBerkeley ucsantabarbara ucdavis UCRiverside UCIrvine UCSDalumni ucmerced love, love that the regents are doing this!!!

Well, the schools do not control visas and immigration.....

I have plenty of friends from abroad who can definitely say that staying in this state for education right now, although virtual, is better than attempting an equivalent someplace else

Of course they do, don't want to lose all the Red Chinese cash they've been banking for years.

The university of California is going to lose because they are an American institution in America trying to sue America for enforcing American laws that defend America from criminal invasion at our border. They protect criminals for there votes and that is the only reason.

LMFAO.

Why not sue the China administration?

THANK YOU.., another hateful immigration attempt undoubtedly by steve miller who is intimidated by people much smarter and more worldly than he is‼️

What's their justification if Harvard's gone to an all-online platform for the Fall? Some students have been discovered tied to CCP. Professors were charged for not disclosing their Chinese funding sources. Sounds like the whole program needs to be audited for safety.

It’s not a NEW rule!!! It’s always been the rule and was the rule even under Obama. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Bravo!!

It’s all about the money... many CA students can’t get in to the UC schools. Might give new options to CA students.

Meanwhile Australia will be letting them come there & has eliminated extradition!

Just ask yourself would they be allowed to come solely based on the fact they have only been virtual students with online courses only. No...so why should they be able to stay? 💯🎯

Schools going to loose again

Steps to live better and bolder life If you feel like you’re ready to make some changes to live a bigger, bolder life..

Universities who take foreign donations don’t set American immigration policy. Or any policy for that matter

Excellent. Right on cue.

GET TRUMP OUT NOWWWWWW AND PUT HIM IN JAIL WITH PUTIN!

Harvard & MIT Are Suing Trump Over ICE's New Student Visa Rules“The order came down without notice — its cruelty surpassed only by its recklessness,” wrote Harvard President Larry Bacow in a statement obtained by CNN. “It appears that it was designed purposefully to place pressure on colleges and universities to open their on-campus classrooms for in-person instruction this Fall, without regard to concerns for the health and safety of students, instructors, and others.”
