Un estudio muestra que los pacientes con coronavirus pueden beneficiarse de la sangre de los que se han recuperado

Para 10 pacientes gravemente enfermos con el nuevo coronavirus, una dosis única de anticuerpos extraídos de la sangre de personas que se habían recuperado de COVID-19 pareció salvarles la vida, acortar la duración de los síntomas, mejorar los niveles de oxígeno y acelerar la eliminación viral, según reportes de investigación recientemente publicados.

Con una vacuna a una distancia de al menos un año y sin tratamientos claros disponibles para el COVID-19, la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de EE.UU aprobó el 24 de marzo el uso de dicha terapia como tratamiento experimental en ensayos clínicos y para pacientes críticos sin otras opciones.El nuevo estudio piloto señaló que la terapia no decepcionará.

Para una mujer de 49 años sin enfermedades subyacentes, la infección por COVID-19 progresó rápidamente a la falta de aliento y al ingreso hospitalario. Para el día siete después del inicio de sus síntomas, su radiografía de tórax había mostrado la opacidad característica del vidrio esmerilado y tenía acumulaciones de fluidos o proteínas, infiltrados, esparcidos por ambos pulmones.

El estudio no fue diseñado para tener un grupo de comparación de pacientes que no obtuvieron plasma convaleciente. Pero los autores crearon un grupo de control a partir de una selección aleatoria de 10 pacientes con COVID-19 tratados en los mismos hospitales y emparejados con los diez participantes del estudio en edad y sexo y la gravedad de la enfermedad.

“Este estudio piloto sobre la terapia [convaleciente en plasma] muestra un efecto terapéutico potencial y un bajo riesgo en el tratamiento de pacientes con COVID-19 graves”, escribieron los autores de la nueva investigación. “Una dosis de [plasma convaleciente] con una alta concentración de anticuerpos neutralizantes puede reducir rápidamente la carga viral y tiende a mejorar los resultados clínicos”, agregaron.
