Uber says it received 5,981 reports of sexual assault in the U.S. in 2017 and 2018. Nineteen people died from physical assaults during that period.

Uber Technologies Inc. said it received 5,981 reports of sexual assault involving U.S. passengers or drivers during 2017 and 2018, underscoring the risk that has been a chief criticism of ride-hailing companies around the world.

In a report released Thursday, Uber voluntarily disclosed the first comprehensive review of safety issues involving its ride service. Sexual violence in particular has been a challenge for Uber as well as rivals including Lyft Inc. and China’s Didi, prompting heightened pressure from lawmakers, advocacy...

How can these numbers possibly be evaluated without the context of per ride industry level statistics, trended over time. For all we know, incidents per 100,000 rides could down considerably from 5-10 years ago

If those numbers were stated for any other major corporations, what would the result be: boycotting? Congressional hearings? Civil lawsuits?

None of my loved ones would ever ride Uber or Lyft.
