In Friday's Bahamas Bowl, UAB looks to get its 50th win since returning to the field in the 2017 season. The Blazers face Miami (Ohio) in the game that will televised on ESPN.

UAB enters the game at 6-6 overall following its 37-27 win over Louisiana Tech in the regular-season finale. Outside of a blowout loss on the road at LSU, the Blazers were 0-5 in one-possession games with a total of 27 points separating them from what could have been an 11-1 record and fourth appearance in five seasons in the C-USA title game.

“Obviously, our expectations here are extremely high because we set them the last five years,” Vincent said. “Our goal every year is to win a championship -- plain and simple. When that didn’t happen, midpoint in the season and we realized after the FAU game that we were going to be out of the conference championship, it comes down to what the program is built on. A lot of programs at that time, they’ll fade or fall apart. This program stood tall.

The Blazers reeled off two straight wins, against Middle Tennessee State and Charlotte, but hit a three-game skid in late October when starting quarterback Dylan Hopkins suffered a concussion in the first half of a 20-17 loss at Western Kentucky. Former Baylor transfer and backup quarterback Jacob Zeno performed admirably in Hopkins’ stead and was in a position to lead the Blazers on either a game-tying or game-winning drive in losses to the Hilltoppers, FAU and UTSA.

“This team right here showed extreme character, leadership and perseverance in times of society today that you don’t see that,” Vincent said. “That’s something they’ll carry with them throughout their life. That’s something I’m proud of -- this team sticking together and fighting until the end. Football is life, and life is football in a lot of ways.
