U.S. retail sales rose 0.5% in March. Are Americans buying more or just paying more? Here’s a breakdown of the data:

Excluding gas stations and auto dealers, retail sales rose only 0.2%.Adjusting for inflation, retail sales fell in March.

While Americans are still buying lots of goods and services, in many cases they’re simply paying more money.High inflation is outweighing workers’ wage gains and pinching budgets leading Americans to think twice about what they buy and how much.
