Some U.S. hospitals have been hit by coordinated ransomeware attacks designed to infect their systems and extort money, federal agencies warned on Wednesday.

The agencies said hackers are using Ryuk ransomware — malicious software used to encrypt data and keep it locked up — and the Trickbot network of infected computers to steal data, disrupt health care services and extort money from health care facilities. Such data hijacking often cripples online systems, forcing many to pay up to millions of dollars to restore their services.

Officials do not recommend paying ransoms, as it does not guarantee data will be recovered and could"embolden" hackers to carry out further attacks.that an unnamed Trump administration official said several hospitals have been targeted in the attacks over the past two days. The official said the incidents may be connected and that the federal government is investigating the attacks.

"We are experiencing the most significant cybersecurity threat we've ever seen in the United States," said Charles Carmakal, Mandiant's chief technology officer, describing the group as"one of most brazen, heartless and disruptive threat actors I've observed over my career."NPR's Steve Inskeep that what makes these attacks notable is their target: hospitals.

So, as Jimmy Malone might say: what are we prepared to do about it? Related:

So hospitals are now treated as patients. Got it.

This happens literally every single day, and has for years. It's nice of you to phrase it as a new threat just to cause panic and generate ratings, though. Every day you slip further from even low standards of journalism.

Ours was one of them

Take money out of the Administrators paycheck to cover the cost, as he or she chose to not provide effective security against such attacks.

I saw this on an episode of gray’s anatomy

Maybe it is someone that has had a medical bill for a heart attack and is trying to get the money back

Probably Biden's friends, Chinese

😢😡

These are some real douches to pull a stunt like this in the middle of a pandemic. We in the US need to do better with cyber security threats or stuff like this won't just keep happening, it will get worse.

This has been going on for some time.

Leave the hospitals alone, trump! You’ve done enough damage.

naw im pretty sure the left is attempting to cover their bullshit numbers and the concerted effort between them and some medical professionals and care providers

If only they had been warned about this years and years and years ago when it first started happening. If only professional security firms had said something years and years and years ago when they saw that this was a danger. I guess there was nothing that could prevent it.

Please follow up with actual damage done and how hospitals, local and federal agencies have combatted said. TY.

Hospital billing depts would not be extorted for cash if USA had socialist medicine No money - no problems

damn these hackers balling with those mechanical keyboards

Trump CULT members...

And hospital billing departments are not amused. Extorting money is their turf.

how much is trump’s cut?
