That’s not usually the case for those who rise to the top of their sport. Successful athletes are routinely used to pitch products ranging from athletic equipment and sports drinks to cars and credit cards. Even competitive video gamers are now landing sponsorship deals and appearing inNot so for Caruana. The near miss in last year’s title match hasn’t attracted sponsorship opportunities, and any new corporate interest has offered only increased exposure.

It’s still a decent living, with top players pulling down six figures in annual earnings. And for Americans like Caruana, those earnings opportunities have greatly improved in recent years thanks in large part to retired index fund pioneer Rex Sinquefield. Yet while the best players are able to live comfortably on their winnings, Caruana still worries about a continued lack of support from corporate partners. “Generally, it is one of the concerns I have, that chess doesn’t have a lot of corporate sponsorship,” says Caruana. “In the ’90s, there was IBM. They were sponsoring tournaments; there was the Deep Blue program. … Since then, there haven’t been many big corporate sponsors in chess.
