U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Wednesday that he would be willing to allow more than 2.8 million people from Hong Kong to live and work in the U.K. if China implements a controversial proposed national security law on the former British colony.that the law would infringe on the"one country, two systems" agreement China reached with Britain in 1997 when Britain ceded control of the territory.
He also noted that the U.K. would be making"one of the biggest changes in our visa system in history." It would allow Hong Kongers with these passports to come to the U.K. for a renewable period of a year. The current system allows them to come without a visa for up to six months.British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab had previously suggested that the U.K. could admit a smaller group,
Raab said Tuesday that Britain could take in those currently with passports, but said that if a mass exodus from Hong Kong took place he would want other countries to also admit people.Tiananmen Square crackdown, which took place on June 4, 1989Johnson did not elaborate in the column about how the 2.5 million people eligible for a British passport would be able to attain one, or how arrivals from Hong Kong would attain citizenship.
"Many people in Hong Kong fear that their way of life — which China pledged to uphold — is under threat," Johnson wrote."If China proceeds to justify their fears, then Britain could not in good conscience shrug our shoulders and walk away... I still hope that China will remember that responsibilities go hand in glove with strength and leadership."
We can see the courage and determination of the British government to assume historical responsibility and its emphasis on democracy and freedom. In contrast, how shameful the Chinese government is😩👎
I think a citizenship for BNOs without landing in UK is better to both. HKers can stay in HK but at worst case, they can leave. If it only means a path to citizenship, many ppl may land UK for safeguard reason.

This is what UK should do. StandWithHongKong
Just beware of those pro-bejing supporters.
Who cares ? Didn’t you experiment with herd immunity on your citizens and got 30,000 plus dead ?
Trump is going to unfriend him!
The hypocrisy. Weren’t y’all just closing borders to Africa pre covid
Way to go. Small country, big heart!
This is interesting. Totally counter to his typical anti-immigration stance.
This is how true allies lead. HongKongNeedsHelp
......would be willing......
Is it me or is Boris Johnson way less of a crummy person after nearly dying from COVID?
That’s the smart move
PR move. i get some individuals will take up the offer for sure, but the overwhelming majority of people in HK won't leave their home, because that's what it is.
This is very constructive & bold decision for Boris Johnson.
They went brexit to get rid of immigrants, among other things. Now asking them to come back? GTFO.
But wait, I thought immigrants were bad… gammon
What about Americans ?
Great: how many from the U.S.?
