The 2021 men’s NCAA tournament featured more upsets than ever before. After 64 games, however, it has produced a Final Four that features a pair of top-seeded teams, a No. 2 and a very unusual Cinderella that happens to own more title banners than anyone else.
The Final Four field was filled out Tuesday when overall No.1 seed Gonzaga advanced its quest to become the first undefeated champion since 1976 by dispatching USC. The Zags will enter the weekend as the largest favorites in a semifinal game in Final Four history. Gonzaga on Saturday will play 11th-seeded UCLA—the most decorated team in tournament history—which completed its transformation to the underdog role by edging No. 1 seed Michigan on Tuesday behind 28 points from sophomore Johnny Juzang. UCLA became just the second team ever to advance from the First Four to the Final Four, following in the footsteps of Virginia Commonwealth in 2011.
They join No. 1 seed Baylor and No. 2 Houston, winners of the other regional semifinals on Monday, completing the first Final Four grouping in which all the teams hail from west of the Mississippi River. When Baylor and Houston square off on Saturday, they will represent two redemption arcs that originate from different parts of Texas. South regional champion Baylor reached its first Final Four since 1950, a milestone many expected the Bears to achieve in 2020 before the emerging coronavirus pandemic canceled the tournament last March.
