WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump ramped up his pressure campaign to get public schools to fully reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic, tweeting Wednesday that he may withhold federal funding from schools that do not resume in-person classes this fall.
Shortly after Trump's first tweet about defunding schools, the president pivoted to attacking his own administration's health guidelines for reopening schools, calling them tough, expensive and impractical. But with the traditional start of the school year just weeks away, there are still few concrete plans in place on either the state or the federal level to help schools determine how best to reopen safely.
But while Trump lacks the authority to force schools to reopen, when it comes to providing additional money for schools, that authority rests firmly with Congress. On Capitol Hill, there is growing support for including additional funds for schools in the next coronavirus relief bill, which is expected to pass later this month.
Why can't teachers wear masks and socially distance like the rest of workers that are going back to work says the reporter from her family room. Not a well thought out question. Teachers have 30 or so kids in the classrooms. Why aren't CNBC reporters at the studio?
sonowwhat6 Protect the children! Protect the teachers! Don’t let them bully you into killing people!
Men who believe a woman should not be President because they're emotional and all...Really need to look out for just how whiny, complaininy, and petty Trump is. Don't Trump seem a lil womanish to you? Asking for a friend.
Sick adults can't work and sick children can't attend school so let's ignore Trump and listen to those who know.
Wow! It’s always about money with him and using it as threats!
Complete joke. But a good argument for developing a longer term supplemental remote learning component. That could be paid for over time by reducing the of teachers required and would insure that more students are exposed to the best instructors.

Again the V P try's to protect this guy. What a softy kisser.
Schools that collect $ from students do t need federal funding in first place.
If he does this, all States need to stop paying their Federal Taxes. Keep them for themselves because they won't get them back.

I am 100% certain that there is a plan in place just in case this blows up. You know, kinda like we had here in Florida when we opened up the entire state early. 🙄😖 So much winning.. So much
He is destroying his own campaign. Consistently in the 30-40% range, now, and he cannot win with those numbers.
Our beloved president sends a lot of threats, literally almost everyone is threatened.
Singlehandedly destroying America at its foundation.
How much does Trump care about education? Two words, Betsy Devos.
How will that get the school open?
Threat to the people.🤬 Must be someone who can get him out as quickly as possible. He is dangerous and psychic.😱
Nah, Trump won't dare. He started a game of chicken. Just call him out. COVID19
So states have their say only when it doesn't go against the president
Trump jumpin' up & down about schools opening up, but is NOT saying if his kid Barron, his Grandkids, or how many, STAFF members kids/grandkids will be PHYSICALLY attending school or will they be homeschooled with private tutors ? I would sure like to know. RT if you would too
Good. Kids need to be in school
Dangerous
Cruelty.
Thank you President Trump for fighting for what's best for our kids!
See vabbè!
Trump is terrifying families by forcing them to endanger their children...Trump is worse than any thug or terrorist.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Who cares what that idiot says he is irrelevant
Can he even do that? Doesn't congress appropriate funds?
CNBC boss
