Speaking to reporters on the tarmac at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania, the president said the celebration honoring Barrett would be “just a very nice event.” Barrett is expected to be approved in a nearly party-line vote Monday night after a quick and contentious confirmation process, and over the objections of Democrats and some Republicans who called her nomination too close to next week’s election.
Her nomination has been bookended by coronavirus outbreaks within the Trump administration. At the first, which many have linked to Trump’s Sept. 26 announcement, officials mingled in the Rose Garden with few masks and no social distancing.
