President Donald Trump on Tuesday turned a news conference about Hong Kong into an extended diatribe against his Democratic rival Joe Biden, attributing dozens of policy ideas to him that appeared drawn from opposition research.to allow for sanctions against those who enable a new Chinese security law governing Hong Kong and an executive order revoking Hong Kong’s special trade status, Trump spoke to reporters for close to an hour.
The disjointed, stream-of-consciousness remarks, though initially billed to reporters as a news conference on Hong Kong, could have been mistaken for the lengthy speeches Trump typically delivers at campaign rallies. But for all the heat thrown Biden’s way, Trump insisted that he didn’t believe myriad polls showing him trailing the former vice president in key swing states and even some traditionally red states.
President Trump signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which requires the State Department to annually review whether the city is 'sufficiently autonomous' to justify its special trading status with the US.
