President Trump is reviving the disgraceful legacy of 'law-and-order' politics — a term that had largely dropped out of the American political lexicon because of its association with racism and repression. ed_kilgore writes

For a possible analogy of the current nationwide explosion of unrest in response to the killing of George Floyd, you have to go back to the 1960s, particularly to the “long, hot summer” of 1967, when civil unrest occurred in 150 cities and the National Guard was called out in 34 states, and then the sometimes-violent protests in 1968 in more than a hundred locations following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Law-and-order politics were not strictly aimed at repressing African-Americans or quelling “race riots.” Thanks to the many late-1960s, early-1970s student protests focused on the War in Vietnam and America’s imperial pretensions, conservative politicians made great hay promising to rein in ungrateful middle-class students and self-styled campus radicals.

By the time Reagan was elected president, broad-scale civil unrest had subsided and students were no longer particularly liberal, much less radical. But tough-on-crime rhetoric in both parties was associated with rising crime rates and drug use.

ed_kilgore Nice piece. But how is this approach different than the Giuliani “broken windows”’approach? (A theory that predated him but that he adopted.). I don’t think this approach has been dormant or is outdated.

ed_kilgore Willie Horton Politics. Giuliani ran on it, Bush Ran on it, Trump Ran on it. Not sure I would say it is out of fashion. It’s the foundation stone of every repub platform. Locking people up never goes out of fashion or out of business

Trump Weighing Options On Protest Response, White House Official SaysPresident Trump hasn't decided whether he will deliver a formal speech addressing the protests that have erupted over police brutality and the death of George Floyd, a White House adviser says. Problem is that if an aide writes a nice compassionate speech it will be VERY HARD for LittleDonnie to just recite it and not go off the rails and scream at the grownups that he is VERY MAD at them for being so UNFARE to him! god I hope not Don't even bother. He always makes things worse, and sadly he doesn't even care about what happened

Audio: In 'Unhinged' Call, Trump Tells 'Weak' Governors to 'Dominate' Protesters“You’ve got a big National Guard out there that’s ready to come in and fight like hell,” the president told governors during a video teleconference Does no one else find it hilarious that we’re at the point that media is angry that trump asked governors to stop people from burning down buildings and businesses and beating innocent people up? He’s the enemy for asking governors to stop that. Hilarious. Here’s a guy who considers himself macho by tweeting and bullying. He could have offered empathetic words to unite in a time of crisis but seems bent on violence and civil strife. The scum of humanity Enough with the propaganda from the narcissistic sociopath!

Trump unloads on governors over protest response, calls them 'weak'President Trump unloaded on governors in a phone call Monday over how they've responded to protests and riots across the country following the death of George Floyd, calling them “weak” and urging them to 'dominate.' Trump can’t be a leader and show leadership so he wants others to do it for him. Well his wish will come true in November. From the coward cowering in the Whitehouse bunker. You know i wish this president felt this way about the covert 19 response he wants these governors get more aggressive he should practice what he preaches
