President Trump is expected to order a review of a law that has long protected Twitter, Facebook and Google from being liable for user posts - an attempt to intervene in the media that experts say is unlikely to survive legal scrutiny 1/3

News of the proposed executive order came after Trump attacked Twitter for tagging the President’s tweets about unsubstantiated claims of fraud in mail-in voting with a warning prompting readers to fact-check the posts.

The draft order, as written, attempts to circumvent Congress and the courts in directing changes to long-established interpretations of Section 230. It represents the latest attempt by Trump to use the tools of the Presidency to force private companies to change policies that he believes are not favorable to him.

Social media companies have been under pressure from many quarters, both in the United States and other countries, to better control misinformation and harmful content on their services. The executive order would call for the Federal Communications Commission to propose regulations for Section 230, part of a 1996 law called the Communications Decency Act.

The draft order also states that the White House Office of Digital Strategy will re-establish a tool to help citizens report cases of online censorship. The tool will collect complaints of online censorship and submit them to the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission . The FCC and the FTC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In an interview with Fox News Channel on Wednesday, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr said Twitter has decided “to engage the president of the United States with its own partisan, political viewpoint.”

If social media isn’t liable for its’ users posts, then why do they bother acting like a publisher?

A Shameful act by a global leader, acting so cheaply

Die Natur wurde Jahrhunderte lang Geschändet und niemand aber auch niemand hat es interessiert, kann es sein daß Deutschland dieses Interesiert aber weg Diskutiert wird!

Unsubstantiated claims? Journalism should be more than accepting social media fact checking. Do some work or change your wording.

Excited to watch this blow up in his fat face.

Is someone going to tell him?

rkonizeski

Block him!

He manipulates the econonmy and stock market with his tweets...

Hey, by all means, just shut it down. Then Trump can’t use Twitter to spew his lies and misinformation, and he can’t harass, bully and intimidate those who criticize or disagree with him.

WhiteHouse realDonaldTrump SenateFloor DeadlyDictatorWannabeTrump is having a temper tantrum as he's not used to ANY rules applying to Him. He doesn't care about 100,000+ dead and Covid still spreading.

Trump is using Exec Order, an instrument of goverment for his own personal agenda, for election propaganda, of misinformation. that is a criminal impeachable offence

Trump’s EOs always sign & grin photo ops; designed by WH staffers (as pressure relief valves) to placate deranged trump into thinking he’s actually accomplishing something; like letting a child “steer” the kiddie car on a merry go round

Maybe if Twitter called its additions to realDonaldTrump's tweets 'alternative facts,' à la KellyannePolls, the WhiteHouse might find them more acceptable.

It’s called freedom of speech! It’s a right we have and even our dictator can’t take it away!

ITS ABOUT TIME!!!! Social Media gets away with way to much and profits of it all SHUT IT ALL DOWN!!!!!!!!

'Legal scrutiny...' When the Supreme Court is made of a majority of right-wing enablers there is no such thing as 'legal scrutiny' for Trump. If he wins in November, there never will be.

100,000 dead and counting.

morgfair He needs to be stopped! Why doesn't Twitter do what they do to civilians? Lock him out! He abuses Twitter more than anyone else. He's just mad because so many people find him a failure.

🙏

'It requires the agency to look at whether a social media platform uses deceptive policies to moderate content and if its policies are inconsistent with its terms of service.' This could backfire on Trump, as others have tweets removed for saying what Trump gets away with saying.

President Tweetie doesn't like any platform that calls out his lies.

Over 100,000 dead and this is the focus.. shame ..!

Is this the man elected by people from a country used to believe in press freedom?! The country used to be proudly associated with this quote “Give me liberty, or give me death”?!

Yes yes yes. Finally Trump follows China banning fb, Google & Twitter... Socmed sucks

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shut them ALL DOWN!!!!!!!! GO TRUMPY GO!!!!!!!!

He thinks he's a court now?

So if Twitter is no longer protect from content their users post, the first thing I'd do is delete Trump's account as his posts will get Twitter sued the most (e.g. Trump's claim Scarborough murdered a staffer).

realDonaldTrump is a stone cold loser who needs to be drawn and quartered

Can't Twitter just set up a fake website specifically for him with millions of bot accounts that constantly agree with everything he says?

Good thing there’s nothing else more important going on right now so trump can write a fake executive order to make it look like Twitter did something wrong🙄🙄🙄🙄

There is nobody in the world better at hustling backwards than Donald Trump. If he wants to make it easier for them to be sued for content posted on their website, they will have no choice but to fact check more and weed out bots, both devastating to Trump.

Trump is raging like a wounded dog because he knows everyone is seeing him for what he is...a con man. POTUS \\ Tell Melania I said 'hi'

Making social media liable for user's posts is actually a bad thing IMO. He shouldn't do that. They just need to allow ALL voices to be heard, that's the issue here.

You just wait! You guys (Media) will pay for your anti American ways!!!President Trump 2020

The draft order directs federal agencies to modify the way the law is implemented and orders a review of alleged ‘unfair or deceptive practices.’ It also calls on the government to reconsider advertising on services judged to ‘violate free speech principles’ 2/3

Resist the Dicktator!!

Go Pres!

He truly believes he's the only person on earth that can make rules and laws. Thats a dictator right?!?

LOL

twitter all you have to do is delete his account

Review this.

In other words... DOA.

100,000 dead
