Researchers at the University of Oxford and the University of Vienna who study Goffin cockatoos, say one bird who taught himself how to make and use tools is now teaching other birds his skills. Video provided by Buzz60A few years ago, scientist Richard Major shared a video with colleagues of a sulphur-crested cockatoo in Sydney opening a closed garbage bin. The bird slowly lifted the heavy lid with its beak and foot to reveal the treasure trove of leftover food inside.
In 2018, scientists launched an online survey to see if Sydney residents had seen cockatoos open household trash cans before, according to the statement. By the end of 2019, they found residents from 44 different areas who had observed the trash-raiding cockatoos. Major called it a"pretty rapid spread."
“That spread wasn’t just popping up randomly," Major said in the statement. "It started in southern suburbs and radiated outwards." The scientists found that only about 10% of the birds could open the trash cans, and most were male cockatoos, which tend to be larger than female cockatoos. The others waited until one bird opened the garbage bin before helping themselves to the trash.
