The massive site is located close to the proposed LG Energy Solution battery plant and sites eyed by such companies as Samsung and Rivian.

The 1,600 acres is part of an overall 4,100-acre area owned by the Arizona State Land Department and is generally located between Germann and Kentworthy roads, the future State Route 24 extension to the north and the Central Arizona Project canal on the east.

On Wednesday, the town unanimously approved rezoning the site from urban and neighborhood uses to urban employment, which allows office and industrial parks and light, general and regional commercial uses, with no discussion. A few residents submitted online oppositions to the application. Last week, the town's planning commission recommended approval of the application by the state land department, which has the power to approve or deny auction requests made by businesses or other entities.

The town's approval came months after it also rezoned 950 acres in the same area, where Samsung was eyeing land for a semiconductor factory, and another 600 acres that LG Energy Solution has proposed to build a lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility on.
