The Democratic gubernatorial primary in the state is expected to be an incredibly crowded contest.
Already, several candidates have declared their bids: Rushern Baker, the former Prince George's County executive, state Comptroller Peter Franchot; former state Attorney General Doug Gansler; John King Jr., a former education secretary under Obama; author Wes Moore; and Mike Rosenbaum, a Baltimore businessman.
Perez served for four years as the head of the DNC, taking the helm of a beleaguered national party three months after Hillary Clinton’s surprise loss to former President Donald Trump. Before he served as Labor secretary under Obama, he was head of the Department of Justice civil rights division, as well as state Labor secretary and a member of the Montgomery County Council.
On the Republican side, current state Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz has declared a bid. Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford declined to run to succeed Hogan.
openargs I'd ask him his thoughts on the run, but he already emailed me the questions...
Shame he's no successes to run on.
If Tom Perez is the best candidate the Democratic party can run in this election, then Democrats can kiss the Maryland gubernatorial race goodbye.
Please do!
JulieZebrak Hard pass
JulieZebrak Nope. Nope.
MD deserves better.
If Perez runs the Democratic field will include 2 former U.S. Cabinet Secretaries and the current Maryland Comptroller - all from TakomaParkMD, population 17,000+
We need more corporate fascists in government.
No thanks.
Doesn’t have a prayer.
He’s useless.
NastyOldWomyn Why?
I hope he gets as many votes as Kamala got delegates.
Gross
No. I would not vote for him. Unfortunately, the entire field running for Maryland governor is lacking in imagination and moral authority. It’s going to be a really bad election year here in Maryland
I'll pass.
What were his skills and achievements as head of the DNC? Didn’t he lose seats in the House and fail to take the Senate? Fail upward, or Peter Principle?
Union buster Nah
Buffalo’s own! TomPerez
