A patient of mine recently described to me her re-emergence into the world after nearly 12 months of self-imposed quarantine at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. The hesitation and even shock she felt reminded me of the scene in Washington Irving’s eponymous story in which Rip Van Winkle staggers into town after his 20-year slumber and beholds how different everything appears: “Strange names were over the doors—strange faces at the windows—everything was strange.
. For the past year, being around other people has been fraught with danger. Even with vaccines available, there is still uncertainty about how well they will work, especially against new variants of the virus taking hold around the world. It isn’t surprising, then, that many people remain hesitant or even anxious about resuming activities that used to be routine. Some may choose to remain isolated, waiting for a more certain and widespread all-clear sign.
At the same time, the post-Covid world is different than the pre-Covid one of 2019. Old social networks may be more constricted by the losses of family, friends, co-workers or acquaintances who have moved away, died or are disabled from chronic conditions that have worsened during the pandemic. Our social connections at religious or civic organizations will have to be reset in the coming year by the persistent need for masks and social distancing until we achieve true herd immunity.
