The debate over disproportionate use of force by police that followed George Floyd’s death has largely ignored some of the most vulnerable targets: children.

They have been handcuffed, felled by stun guns, taken down and pinned to the ground by officers often far larger than they were. Departments nationwide have few or no guardrails to prevent such incidents.

The AP contacted every police department detailed in this story. Some did not respond; others said they could not comment because of pending litigation. Those responding defended the conduct of their officers or noted changes to the departments after the incidents took place. The trauma lasts. Kids can’t sleep. They withdraw, act out. Their brains are still developing, and the encounters can have long-term impact, psychologists said.

“You can’t say just because a student is 12 that we’re not going to use force,” Canady said. “Most 12-year-olds you wouldn’t. But you don’t know the circumstances of everything. You could have a 12-year-old who is bigger, stronger and assaulting a teacher, and you may very well have to use some level of force.”Royal, the boy in Chicago, was handcuffed for nearly 30 minutes in the cold, alongside his mother and other adults in the house.

But the attorney for the two families, Al Hofeld Jr., said the incidents are part of a pattern and represent a specific brand of force that falls disproportionately on poor families of color.About 165 miles due south, in the rural hamlet of Paris, Illinois, 15-year-old Skyler Davis was riding his bike near his house when he ran afoul of a local ordinance that prohibited biking and skateboarding in the business district — a law that was rarely enforced, if ever.

Video of the pursuit was captured by surveillance cameras outside the police department, and the family has filed a federal lawsuit against the police officers. Two officers received written warnings, according to attorney Jude Redwood. The Paris Police Department declined to comment.

It was a few hours before midnight when a San Fernando, California, police officer stopped to ask if they were lighting fireworks, according to a complaint filed in federal court. The boys had been walking through a park, accompanied by an older brother and his dog. The video shows an officer forcing his 14-year-old brother to the ground and handcuffing him behind his back. His 13-year-old friend struggles next to him, his neck and shoulders pinned by the officer’s knees for 20 seconds.A judge found the boys not guilty at a bench trial. Neal is suing the city and the police officer on their behalf.

In the future, teachers will be replaced with cameras and YouTube videos, with all discipline meted out by the police.

You shouldn’t talk about children and that drug addicted felon in the same story.

and so they do in Germany. Children of separated parents who do not want to live with the parent the court assigned to them are collected with police force from the other parents home.... transparencyandpersonalaccountability do not exist

Bring in the FBI to ensure PROPORTIONATE, Constitutional application of Law & Order. To save the good cops & protect all citizens, fire the law breaking bad cops and hire from a more diverse pool, better trained, good cops. Like any industry. FBI & HR experts must oversee all.

MORE DISPROPORTIONATE use of force AFTER George Floyd's rape/murder film? If some only became worst, there's the proof of Klan infiltration & insubordination (lack of respect for the Law & Order). To those bad cops, as DJ Trump says, 'You're Fired'.

But those children, often huge violent teenagers do not have tiny wrists do they. Look at the knife crime epidemic suspects. Another story making the worst in society the victims

An investigation finds numerous cases in which children as young as 6 have been handcuffed, felled by stun guns, taken down and pinned to the ground by police officers. And departments nationwide have few or no guardrails to prevent such incidents.

Children are kinda still cartilage. They bend.

Is it so hard to imagine that the reasons are cultural and not racial? It’s culturally acceptable and encouraged in urban environments to commit crime. Don’t believe me? Check out the role models.

An ABSURD example because Floyd had just fallen out of the police car still handcuffed the entire time. Not a 'use of force' but an actual crime. The other two were brand new cops they had 3 days he had 19 years.

So wrong

ول کنید دیگه بابا. یه تمدن غربی رو با جرج فلوید گاییدید به جاش همجنسبازی و لیبرالیسم چپ و زیرخوابی چین ویروسی رو آوردید

There can't be any doubt now that there is a full on war against police fueled by the media and blindly followed by Sheep!!!

How about assaulting Canadian travellers and drugging them over the US border, in handcuffs, back to Canada? DHSgov CBP SecMayorkas - how do you call this “procedure”?

'Targets'.

Chiraq.

Ya just ignore that a bunch of morons were screaming and hollering that inadvertently caused the cops to ignore what was happening to Floyd.

good luck

Why 'Debate' whether or not armed officers of the state should inflict violence on children? If it was 'Ignored' it was by the people who are fans of police violence.

Cops are harmful to children.

Yikes

The allegations don't seem false on video. You can clearly see this clown run towards cops and they literally ignore the fact he had a gun and ignore people saying he just shot people. What people also don't know. FBI had a drone overhead that shows Kyle starting the whole thing. PansyKhan When will Killer Kyle be sent to prison? He needs to pay for his crimes. Supreme Court Backs Police in Two ‘Qualified Immunity’ CasesThe U.S. Supreme Court threw out two separate excessive-force lawsuits filed against police, ruling that the doctrine of qualified immunity protected the officers from having to answer the allegations in court Man we are in serious trouble This will cause misdirected anger towards the Supreme Court. Their job is to interpret the law. Lawmakers create the laws. This is not a real doctrine. It is made up
