At a lab, people infected with coronavirus take turns putting their faces into a large cone in a device called “Gesundheit II.” The cone sucks up everything that comes out of their mouths and noses. Scientists are trying to learn how COVID-19 spreads.

This February 2018 photo provided by the University of Maryland School of Public Health shows The Gesundheit II machine in Dr. Donald Milton's Public Health Aerobiology, Virology, and Exhaled Biomarker Laboratory of the university in College Park, Md. The device is helping scientists study a big question: Just how does the virus that causes COVID-19 spread from one person to another?

NEW YORK — At a University of Maryland lab, people infected with the new coronavirus take turns sitting in a chair and putting their faces into the big end of a large cone. They recite the alphabet and sing or just sit quietly for a half hour. Sometimes they cough. It clearly hitchhikes on small liquid particles sprayed out by an infected person. People expel particles while coughing, sneezing, singing, shouting, talking and even breathing. But the drops come in a wide range of sizes, and scientists are trying to pin down how risky the various kinds are.The answer affects what we should all be doing to avoid getting sick. That’s why it was thrust into headlines a few days ago when a U.S.

The potential risk comes from inhaling them. Measles can spread this way, but the new coronavirus is far less contagious than that.

kkennedyAP Looks like something out of “Get Smart.” But hopefully effective. 🙏

I didn’t notice it was time for BS news ! I think their brain will be sucked out as well.

So really they have no idea what they are doing

Gross. All for science.

why not just swab faces holes? do we not know how coughing and sneezing spreads particles? this looks like a joke machine.

Maybe it's spread by infected people taking turns putting their heads into this device? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Shouldn’t they have figured this out in February?

Imagine how much money, time, and resources have been wasted on this bullshit

An active professional politician for close to five decades with no spectacular positive impact on the American people Have suddenly become a good man in 2020. Eight years as V.P. with nothing to remember except for the Burisma family enrichment. Gates of hell shall not prevail!

Exactly, they still don’t know. How many billions have we given the CDC to supposedly figure this out?

Why does this look like a colorized image from a medical text book published in the 18th century?

“Tiny airborne particles may cause a big coronavirus problem”...or...they may NOT. That’s how studies work. Stop assuming you already know and spreading fear faster than the coronavirus.

Next, sit prison inmates in front of the sneezers, and see if it spreads.

Where is that laboratory? Whoville?

The Chinese restaurant case study confirms all of this, like 8 months ago. We need to determine which air filters help stop the virus.

Why the mask/lockdown stuff to 'keep us safe' if no one even knows how it spreads? It's like building a fence to keep out the critters, and only then checking to see if the thing you want to keep out is a bird. So,foolish 'do anything' reaction, or 'teaching the people to obey'?

Ok, this made me spit out my coffee.

Word of mouth is biggest spreader!

It’s encouraging to hear we are learning more about this virus, than just developing a vaccine and therapeutics. This *will* happen again and we should be much better prepared. (Of course, we probably won’t have an administration who tossed out the manual.) VoteBlueDownBallot

Plot twist. The disinfecting of the machine between patients kills some if not most of the transmission

Isn't this also what happens in Cracker Barrel every day?

Dude, what was Gesundheit I? A tissue?

Why does this look like something from 1890s lol

We don't even yet have a reliable test for the infection and this 'Wizard of Oz' contraption is going to expand our understanding?

The average age of people dying from covid19 is 78. Stop it.

It is a bit strange that this was not studied 9 months ago. We should have known by now how COVID19 spreads otherwise we stumbled in the dark with our eyes closed.

His master's voice

I've told you since March, CoronaVirus is highly airborne. Should have worn mask since then. Next time UN shouldn't hire a PhD or masters, hire people who make sense. Have brain & common sense. Don't trust your college classroom theory. Trust your basic instinct of survival

So deadly that we infect people with COVID to test it?

why am I reminded of an 1800's science experiment....

HellgrenWJZ Obviously a very sophisticated scientific laboratory equipment. Made in Russia perhaps🤔

Infodemic Spread the fear.

Looks like a early 1900s machine!

It’s like a Dr. Seuss machine

Hey maybe “Scientists are trying to learn how covid 19 works” should have been the headline instead of the fear mongering one you used. You’re the problem.

I can’t click on the picture because it’s click bait but from here it looks like a homemade device. AP, are you scamming us again?

Do they sanitize that thing between each suck? Yuck!!! Modern science at its best.

Great. Hook one up to her next briefing. My guess is she’d give it a workout.

So they don't even know how it spreads and yet we're all supposed to wear the stupid fucking masks

I would “fart” into this just to see the look on this egg heads faces

Obj has one of those but it blows farts in his face

Should it suck up their eyeballs too? 👀nothing to see here...

Scientists can just go and study the BLM protest super spreader events and do the studies
