After four wars that have left more than 4,000 dead and more than $5 billion in damage to its buildings, Gaza struggles with the toll. AP visits one neighborhood.

Left behind in Gaza are neighborhoods in shambles and families in mourning. But their fears linger, knowing that sooner or later, war could erupt again.A family sits inside a makeshift tent built among the rubble of their home, destroyed by an airstrike in Beit Lahiya.BEIT HANOUN, Gaza Strip - The electricity is out again tonight in what’s left of Zaki and Jawaher Nassir’s neighborhood.

Each afternoon, demolition workers arrive to hack away at this real-life stage set so that the Nassirs and their neighbors can start rebuilding – again. All told, the wars have done more than $5 billion in damage to Gaza’s buildings, roads, electrical and water systems, roughly double the Strip’s annual economic output. Nearly 250,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed.

Gaza’s crisis is rooted in events that came long before Hamas seized control in 2007. More than half of those packed into the Strip are from Palestinian families who fled or were driven from what is now Israel during the 1948 war over its formation. But the recurrent fighting and the blockade of recent years have made life in Gaza far worse.

Five decades ago, Nassir’s father moved his family to a plot of farmland in what was then a village. Today, three- and four-story homes along Al-Baali Street – at the heart of that tract and named after Zaki’s father – are filled with Nassirs. As the Nassir siblings married, they built homes on much of the family’s land, still a few minutes by donkey cart from fields of grain and fruit trees.

Then, in the last days of 2008, Israel launched a major military offensive after heavy rocket and mortar fire by militants across the border. Soon the first war came to Al-Baali Street.

It was my impression that it was one continuous war with a couple of rest periods since 1946

If Hamas would rebuild buildings instead of underground terror tunnels....

This article must have written by some1 who has never visited Gaza. The billion dollar aid has helped Gazans live a life of luxury ( mansions, boutiques, amusement parks, free education, health, food) without breaking a sweat. Rest helps in launching rockets & building tunnels

Gaza is not at war. It is under siege. It is attacked on a daily basis by Israel.

Through four wars, toll mounts in a Gaza neighborhoodFour wars in 13 years: Gaza has been trapped in a cycle of death, destruction, demolition and efforts to rebuild. AP visits a neighborhood that has endured all of them. The US has pretty much bank-rolled all of it The only efforts to 'rebuild', are to rebuild underground terror tunnels. Israel left Gaza many years ago, but rather than focus on real building, the focus is on 'resistance' nevermind the fact that they have been free and self governed for the past 20 years now... Gaza prefers whining over suffering thry have no one to blame but themselves rather than focus on acceptance and appreciation of what they have and could achieve. Thr world, unfortunately is buying their false claims, after all, poor people make great photos.

U.S. donation of COVID-19 vaccines arrives in West Bank and GazaA U.S. donation of 500,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses arrived in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza on Tuesday, as Palestinian officials work to boost uptake and counter a surge in new cases by requiring some workers to get the jab. The Palestinians began administering vaccines in February, but despite having purchased or received what officials have called 'an abundance of doses', uptake has stalled at just 35% of age-eligible Palestinians in the West Bank, and around 11% in Gaza. Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, whose Palestinian Authority (PA) has limited self-rule in the West Bank, said on Monday that unvaccinated public-sector employees would be put on unpaid leave, with immediate effect. Of course, these doses came from the U.S. and not the insidious Israeli Jews who have oppressed the Palestinians for way too long. Time to end that. Too bad the Jew-hating Palestinian government rejected the Pfizer doses offered by Israel as part of an exchange. I don't know why we have to do this....Israel should have stood up. Bastards

Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden: How four presidents created today's Afghanistan messHow America spent 20 years in Afghanistan, only to have the Taliban resume control again as its troops withdrew, will be a topic for historians to ponder for decades. Here's how four presidents have approached what became America's longest war. How about the part where they built a 300,000 troop military who quit... Because none of them addressed the religious and cultural issue in the region. And no matter how much money you spend or how much 'democracy' you brought to them, they still live in the 632AD after the death of the Prophet. Not really. Historians, political scientists, and basically all types of scholars of the region criticized the Afghan operation as doomed to fail once it became clear the Bush administration was just using it as a pretext to invade Iraq. This one is pretty cut and dry.
