A stricken ship off the coast of Mauritius which has already leaked about 1,000 metric tons of oil into a pristine Indian Ocean lagoon could be about to break in two, experts fear -- spelling disaster for the ecologically rich area.

The Japanese-owned ship, MV Wakashio, ran aground at Pointe d'Esny in late July. A massive clean-up operation has been launched from the shore since oil began leaking on Thursday, with thousands of local volunteers heading to the eastern side of the island nation to help. However some on the ground said Tuesday that new cracks had appeared -- and if the ship broke up, thousands more tons of fuel would be released into the lagoon.

"An aerial view shows a large patch of leaked oil from the stricken vessel near Blue Bay Marine Park.Conservationists at the scene say it is too early to assess the extent of environmental damage and want the government to conduct proper assessments. Concerns are also growing for the thousands of local people whose livelihoods will be impacted by the spill.

This is Tragic news.

tsk tsk 🤦🏻‍♀️💔

Omg

This was in the news in Germany WEEKS ago and the world did nothing to avoid a catastrophe. We reap what we sow. Big $$ interests could give a rats ass about the health of the planet. Amassing obscene wealth is paramount!

Why are there huge tankers of oil just floating around out there? Anyone? Maybe we have always had a surplus of oil but was never told the truth? There are a lot more tankers just floating out at sea. Look to the oceans to see.

Whadiyaknow, we humans stuff up again! We simply love shit’n on ourselves!

That’s sad news. Good luck with the clean up efforts. Hardly believe that this still can happen.

Im so glad Im alive to watch the world literally end. Woohoo!

Does oil ever naturally spew from the ground into the ocean?

Why in the hell are we still using fossil fuels in 2020 Oh right, to keep rich old white families rich.
