Hannah YasharoffStranded vacationers are being forced to find alternative travel plans following the collapse of British tour company Thomas Cook, which folded early Monday after failing to secure emergency funding.

Many have turned to Thomas Cook's customer care Twitter account for assistance, even though the company has announced it will not be monitoring social media going forward and referred users to the official website for the latest information.Twitter user @California_Ram, tweeted that he and his wife flew to Manchester for vacation and and are now stuck without"no current visible means of returning home" to Los Angeles, which they were scheduled to do on Oct. 1.

The U.K.'s Civil Aviation Authority tweeted Monday morning that its first repatriation flight had left New York's JFK International Airport with more than 300 passengers on board. Anthony Musa, a federal employee based in Washington, shared an email response with USA TODAY that he received from Thomas Cook customer care after requesting a refund for an upcoming flight to Scotland.
