The study used FBI data on violent and property crimes. Arlington is one of the safest large cities in the U.S., according to a new study by personal finance website MoneyGeek. (Smiley N. Pool / Staff Photographer) By 9:46 AM on Jan 24, 2022 CST Arlington is one of the safest large cities in the U.S., according to a new study. Personal finance website MoneyGeek analyzed crime statistics from nearly 300 U.S. cities to rank the safest and most dangerous cities. Among cities with populations greater than 300,000, Arlington ranked 13th safest. The only large Texas cities considered safer were El Paso (No. 4) and Austin (No. 12). When compared to cities with populations greater than 100,000, Arlington ranked in the middle, at No. 155. Arlington’s population is just under 400,000. To rank the cities, MoneyGeek evaluated FBI data on both violent crimes such as murder, rape and aggravated assault, and on property crimes such as burglaries and car theft. It then used research by professors Kathryn McCollister and Michael French of the University of Miami and Hai Fang of the University of Colorado Denver to quantify the cost of crime. Nearby Frisco, with a population of roughly 212,000, ranked 5th safest overall. Other North Texas cities that fared well: McKinney, with some 208,000 residents, ranked 10th safest. Allen, with a population of 108,000, ranked 11th safest. And Plano, with 290,000 residents, was the 30th safest city. MoneyGeek estimates the total societal cost of crime for the 297 cities in 2020 was $203 billion, up from $176 billion in 2019. The average city saw a 15% increase in the cost of crime from 2019 to 2020. Check here for the full
