. So my parents came here to get their Ph.D.s in the 1980s. Like a lot of immigrants, they came with the intention of returning to their home country. America was also very involved in why Iran and Iraq started a war anyway, so they didn’t want to stay here. But once you have kids, everything changes and gets complicated, so they ended up staying.
My parents had a lot of trauma during the revolution. They didn’t talk about [their lives in Iran] a lot. There were little stories here and there that they told, but I had no conception of Iran. The only images I had of Iran were what I saw on U.S. media. So in my head, Iran was black and white and everything was destroyed. It felt like this hazy, weird dreamland of destruction, where men walk on one side of the street and women walk on the other.
The first time I went to Iran, I was 14 or 15. It was like, "Wow, this country is not in black and white." Seeing dozens of people you’ve never met before but have so much love for you immediately — it was a really beautiful experience, to realize that there is so much love for me in this part of the world. It felt like home instantly. You walk around and you hear Farsi everywhere.
Once I got to college, I randomly discovered fashion blogs and sites like Lookbook.nu. It was really interesting to see how people from around the world wore clothes. So I started following a few bloggers religiously and experimenting with my own clothing. When I first started wearing hijab, I thought, Okay, no one’s going to want to be my friend, so it doesn’t matter what I wear. That killed my self-esteem.
