Each element here shows how inventive design solutions can impact on the overall carbon footprint. For instance, composite materials commonly used to build cars are hard to recycle, so the team are looking at how best to find solutions that provide the qualities needed but don’t go to waste. Elsewhere, the BMW kidney grille’s traditional chrome frame and bars is replaced with a flat digital surface extending the width of the front end of the car and incorporating the headlights.

The i Vision Circular’s body isn’t painted in traditional chemical paint but rather left naked and anodized in light gold from secondary aluminum which means the metals’ raw material is preserved for recyclability. The bumper is made of recycled plastics visibly exposing its flaws as a way of expressing beauty in imperfection, while the tires are manufactured using sustainably grown natural rubber.

Elsewhere in the interior , the construction is a little like Ikea furniture whereby various components are connected via cords, buttons and quick-release fasteners rather than traditionally bonded so they can be easily separated at the end of their individual life, then recycled and repurposed where possible.
