, in part because the company has such a strict attitude about remote work. In October, Schmid joined Rec Room as head of business development, a position that pays about half what he was making before. What that startup does offer, though, is remote work flexibility.

Apple expects employees to return to the office at least three days a week when its Silicon Valley headquarters and other locations reopen. That's a particularly stringent approach at time when other companies are rethinking their approach to remote work. Most Apple employees who responded to an internal survey earlier this year said they value being able to work from home indefinitely, according to

The Verge. "What people are getting frustrated about is that they're trying to compare them and they're like, 'Well, Google is allowing this, Facebook's allowing this,'' Schmid told Insider in an interview."To some degree, Apple's not." headtopics.com

The Cupertino, California-based tech giant designs a lot of hardware, so there's a reason why it needs more employees in the office than software-focused rivals like Google and Facebook.Schmid noted that Apple emphasizes in-person unstructured relationship-building time for workers, and also tries to avoid special treatment for specific staff.

Some employees are still frustrated, though, because other companies are being more flexible about remote work, and they think Apple should be, too, according to Schmid. "People are just really mad cause they feel like the company should be doing that," he added.

During the pandemic, Schmid moved to Seattle to be closer to his wife's family. He discussed his remote situation with his managers at Apple this summer but had no expectation they would let him work from Seattle long term, citing the company's strict egalitarian execution of policies.

"Apple made it clear that my job was in Cupertino, and I didn't have any issues with that, so I said I'll figure that out," Schmid said.During discussions with his managers, the possibility of flying back and forth from Seattle to Cupertino was floated. Meanwhile, another opportunity bubbled up from the hyper competitive market for tech talent. headtopics.com

The CEO of Rec Room, Nick Fajt, often chatted with Schmid about the startup's iOS app and related growth plans, and the conversation naturally turned to Schmid's career plans. "I was talking to Nick the CEO, and I was like, 'I could just do that,' and he was like, 'Yeah, do you want to?' It was kind of a direct conversation about it, and then we kind of went back and forth on what kind of role it would be," Schmid recounted.

"He laid out the needs of the company," Schmid said."After a few back and forths, we were in full alignment."Rec Room's emphasis on employee well-being, remote work flexibility, and a"high trust, high autonomy" approach were major draws for Schmid, even though he recounted several moments of hesitancy about leaving a job that he loved.

"The most important thing I would drive home is figuring out who you're working for," Schmid said.
