in 2021 and will likely extend into bluer areas of Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, putting her seat at risk.that her campaign will draw on her experiences working for organizations like the Poor People’s Campaign and About Face: Veterans Against the War. Despite those progressive credentials, she says she’s less interested in representing a specific party than in combating all the ways that powerful systems like the military and Wall Street work together to keep regular Americans down.
, she pledges that her campaign will be “unbought, unbossed, and unafraid.” Her platform is built upon policies that prioritize “care, not criminalization,” health care as a human right, and equitable and quality public education.2022 feels like a long way off. What motivated you to announce your campaign so early on?I think we would never have done this in normal circumstances, but these are not normal circumstances.
I've seen leaders and systems that really fail my communities and vulnerable communities. I grew up in a patriotic, military family, and my parents instilled a really deep sense of commitment to service and justice at a young age. I really believed in the America that I was told that we have and the values that I was told America is supposed to uphold growing up.
I came home angry, and with this sense of betrayal from people I had entrusted with my life and that had exploited my service. I watch today how veterans are treated like cardboard cutouts for politicians on either side of the aisle to parade around. If our true goal is to be more secure and more safe, then I saw with my own eyes that [war] isn't the answer.
The lie of scarcity in America is exactly that: a lie. There's enough to go around if we have people who have the courage and integrity to really invest in that kind of care. A lot of that analysis and understanding of these systems that I hold now came out of deploying to war. I deployed and was responsible for lives right out of college, and I saw contractors running around making hundreds of thousands of dollars. That raised questions for me.
