and the subsequent takeover by the Taliban and allied militant groups earlier this year, Norway-based conflict photographer and journalist Afshin Ismaeli has dedicated himself to capturing the frightening new reality of Afghan life.

“The Taliban took over when the United States and its allies left the country, and protests started in the streets of the capital—young people, and especially women, were protesting,” Ismaeli toldvia phone, adding, “When we tried to cover the protesters, we faced a lot of brutality from the Taliban. I was beaten by the Taliban, and they broke my cameras and lenses, and they detained me and 13 other journalists.

The role of women and minorities in the newly Taliban-controlled Afghanistan has been of particular concern, and Ismaeli was determined to capture their harrowing experience. “Minorities have been targeted—recently, there was another attack in Kandahar against Shia minorities—and there are very few voices coming out of Afghanistan, so it’s really difficult for the Afghans. I think it’s much easier for us, as foreigners, in the country.

In the photos that follow, Ismaeli endeavored to show a fuller portrait of what life looks like in Afghanistan now. His photos are gripping in their intimacy, turning a rarely seen lens on the Taliban outside of combat and portraying civilian communities who are struggling to adapt to an uncertain new reality while working to keep their lives and families together.Afghanistan’s new government is likely to severely restrict education for girls.
