at the end of February, that’s exactly what I intended to do. I was training for the Brooklyn Half Marathon with Nike, which meant a somewhat endless slew of team runs, strength and mobility classes, and solo jogs. While visiting family out west, I popped by a Lululemon store and saw them: a high-waisted, straight-legged, distant cousin of the sweatpant.
I have to say I was hesitant to purchase. I love buttons and buckles, raw denim and wool, and these had none of the above. But I figured the sleek, stretchy pants would come in handy on the plane ride home, and then for commuting to and from various running-related activities. A pair of joggers with a bit more coverage and flow than my standard wisp-thin
would do me well for the post-work, pre-practice, office elevator rides and subway trips, or so I thought.What I didn’t know at the time was that my plane ride home to New York would be my last for the indefinite future. And though my running club and race and so on would be obviously, and wisely, cancelled, the pants and I would become nearly inseparable.
I can refer to them as ‘the pants’ now because they are, for better or worse, my only pants — I’ve shunned everything else. The pair I brought home are a rich navy, but they come in five deep, muted tones, including a classic black, two shades of grey, and deep wine red the brand calls ‘Cassis.’ They have a hip flattering high-rise, straight-leg fit that ends an inch or so above the ankle .
