Not a single woman who stood on the podium in the 800 meters in Rio will be in the starting blocks for the race final at the Tokyo Olympics due to tightened hormone restrictions

Not a single woman who stood on the podium in the 800 meters in Rio will be in the starting blocks for the race final in Tokyo at this Olympics. That owes more to a change in the International Association of Athletics Federations’ rules than anything to do with athletic performance.

In 2018, the governing body of track and field updated its rules to include hormonal regulations for women’s events in distances between 400 and 1,500 meters. Athletes’ testosterone must fall below a specified threshold to compete, something they can achieve with medication if necessary. The rule was ostensibly to keep the field of competition clean and level. However, some saw it as an attempt to bar, who has naturally high testosterone due to a difference in sex development, or DSD.

As a result, the field in the women’s 800 in Tokyo is wide open. American Athing Mu, 19, is the gold medal favorite after running 1:56.07 in sweltering heat at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in June—the fastest time in the world this year. Semenya, a three-time world champion and two-time defending Olympic gold medalist, isn’t in Tokyo. Her testosterone exceeds the IAAF’s limit and she refuses to take medication to alter her hormones, having done that between 2009 and 2015 and experiencing adverse side effects. As a result, she has been unable to compete in her signature race for nearly three years. The South African attempted to run her way to Tokyo in the 5,000, but was unsuccessful in several attempts this spring.

For once the IOC got it right

The women’s 800 was yesterday morning WSJ keep up

Yeah buts it cool for 87kg ex-men to lift weights in the woman's weightlifting, but it not acceptable for people born woman and considered women since birth to compete Go figure these ridiculous rules

is it positive?

I suppose the Olympic Committee has new rules and if you violate them knowing it then you are OUT simple as that! Glad that these are enforced!

These ladies were even slower than the slowest men in the men’s 800m heats. They never even got any close to the WR and OR records set by other women They’ve been registering the same times as the times set in yesterday final How’s their testosterone levels an issue at all?

Two other reasons : 1 the final was yesterday and 2 they don’t use starting blocks in the 800m.

well done,where white asses?

They're men. Each one is a male with an XY DSD. They should have never been allowed to compete in the women's division to begin with.

this is terrible news

Were any of them not single?
