This is a dumb article. The job still exists, but has changed. Need a degree and good tech skills now. Being close to an executive can’t be a bad place to be.

Automation is not the be-all-end-all. Humans have skills that cannot be replicated. Ask anyone stuck in an infinite-loop automated phone system.
And oftentimes, it is less efficient than it was when there was executive assistant. In my last company, young college graduates were hostile to assistants and treated them as stupid, although assistants often knew more about company's business than they did. Total arrogance!

I think there is a balancing that needs to occur. Emails and calendars are out of control, but it’s hard to know what help looks like. We need to figure that out. Managing out of control email, helping to prioritize and organize, I could use that kind of help!

I spend 50% of my time dealing with a byzantine SAP system to make accountants happy. I think the most cost effective work place is not necessarily the one with the fewest people. We've optimized ourselves into a weird space were $100/hr executives are doing $20/hr work.

Not well, it doesn't. A good EA is a repository of institutional knowledge AND the knowledge of how to manage the people they support effectively. The problem is that most corporations have no idea what admins can do for them, and refuse to see them as anything more than peons.
