Here are some reasons why people believe in conspiracy theories even when their beliefs harm them and their most important relationships, writes MrEwanMorrison

and they walked around believing that they were the only ones who could see the truth; other people were"blind" or were"sheep.""Don’t let the bastards grind you down," he’d always tell me, believing that we were part of a rebel sub-class. So this gave him a sense of identity and even pride.

Just to take stock of the positives: Believing in a conspiracy theory gave my father an identity, a life goal, a single way to interpret confusing events, and a deep sense of camaraderie. After many years of living under this world-narrative about an all-powerful British state, he felt defeated. He’d undermined his own sense of agency.

My father went to the end of his life feeling thoroughly beaten, and it is impossible to say whether the conspiracy theory that at first had empowered him eventually robbed him of his agency, or whether it was simply the mental illness that he’d fled from into his conspiracy beliefs that finally found him.

Either way, I have compassion for people who are drawn into conspiracy theories. The need to have a single belief system that explains everything in the world, that pits the forces of good against evil and gives us a meaningful role to play, is very strong in us. And so many of us who ridicule believers in conspiracy theories don’t understand that these"nut cases" are really just people who need something to believe in.

MrEwanMorrison I follow your thinking and agree.

MrEwanMorrison I tend to believe the rise in depression stems from diet.

MrEwanMorrison Whatever is rejected from the self, appears in the world as an event - Carl Jung

MrEwanMorrison Replying to and MrEwanMorrison How about 'THE GOVERNMENT POISONED ALCOHOL DURING PROHIBITION' Some turn out to be true. Most are based on a deep distrust of governmental /scientific/ medical/ social conditioning. This is the real issue to be addressed.

MrEwanMorrison No, I can’t have compassion for people who believe in conspiracy theories that actually harm others and promote bigotry. Compassion doesn’t help them or the people they hurt. They need to be corrected, need therapy, not excuses.

MrEwanMorrison What is the psychology of believing conspiracies cannot exist, and anything labeled a 'conspiracy theory' must be false? AFAIK, conspiracies have existed, do exist, and will exist. What happened to psychologists' common sense to start preaching that conspiracies cannot be real?

MrEwanMorrison That is not a conspiracy... that is PREVENTION...

MrEwanMorrison Best Wishes from a 12 year emotional researcher with PTSD who read many books on UFOs in the 60s.... and who blames squirrels....it does not give me 'narrative'. Addendum... they were watching a person of 'potential trouble'... to them and maybe even others...

MrEwanMorrison Thus, this misinformation is implanted, imprinted, and becomes embedded in society and individuals at their disrupted emotional level, and away we go... it is the emotional level behind it... the emotional charge they got from it...

MrEwanMorrison C.T. may have some, but not whole truth, or they may be total fiction by a HOAXER. Few are totally real... most are fueled by unfounded conjecture... not facts. THUS... a false narrative... not life narrative... a delusion based on misinformation. 'Covid created in a lab'

MrEwanMorrison Great article, if interested the LIFE Intelligence app covers all aspects of relationships and communication!

MrEwanMorrison Childhood and all trauma, is a shock... growing up with that can cause anxiety and depression and the fear can become paranoia, and it can affect mental health, and a person can start seeing a 'conspiracy'... that is not a 'life narrative to me, but a consequence....

MrEwanMorrison No... a person HAD a plot... but the situation changed and shocked a person, like with Covid-19 strikes, and death suddenly abounds and people can't do their job... a lady friend is a masseur. Well... it is UPHEAVAL emotionally. Shock is a disruption, and it disorients people...

MrEwanMorrison Hope is important for sadness and depression. I like your ADDENDUM, accepting that your father was right. Think about 'conspiracy theories', sometimes, can be a good exercise for the intellect. Greetings and excellent weekend.

MrEwanMorrison Good article mate, but I think the best part was the Addendum lol

MrEwanMorrison Al final siempre sí..... WTF

MrEwanMorrison i need bipolar patients

MrEwanMorrison Every corporation that is private has a charter and that is a conspiracy.

MrEwanMorrison I hate this phrasing as if all conspiracy theories are inherently untrue.
