The U.S. Air Force’s chief of staff wants the service to develop an affordable, lightweight fighter to replace hundreds of aging F-16s and complement a small fleet of sophisticated F-35 stealth fighters. But an affordable, lightweight fighter is exactly what the F-35 was first conceived to be.

With a sticker price of around $100 million per plane, including the engine, the F-35 is expensive. While stealthy and brimming with high-tech sensors, it’s also maintenance-intensive, buggy and unreliable. “The F-35 is not a low-cost, lightweight fighter,” said Dan Ward, a former Air Force program manager and the author of popular business books includingThe F-35 is a Ferrari, Brown told reporters last Wednesday. “You don’t drive your Ferrari to work every day, you only drive it on Sundays.

The Air Force alone wanted nearly 1,800 F-35s to replace aging F-16s and A-10s and constitute the low end of a low-high fighter mix, with 180 twin-engine F-22s making up the high end. The complexity added cost. Rising costs imposed delays. Delays gave developers more time to add yet more complexity to the design. Those additions added more cost. Those costs resulted in more delays. So on and so forth.

This Boondoggle will cost more than that. They took planes out of service and ended production because it was supposed to replace them. The Harrier was one of them. (Last built 2003 directly because of project claims on performance and transition by 2026)

This is ridiculous. They cancelled the F22s and went with the F35s, the greatly inferior fighter, because they were cheaper, and now they’re bitching about how they “failed”? Give me a fuckin break.

Are these the ones the former guy said are invisible?

Plz Help w/ This? Almost a million signatures... CancelStudentLoans StudentLoanJustice POTUS

They're wrong to start with: you should drive your Ferrari every day, else it won't work and you'll have a much higher cost per mile ;)

No one in the government would care about this shit, because they have got what they want

They didn’t wanted to sell these F35 to turkey, now turkey has to thank that they did so 😂😂

Beter olun inşallah. Hepsi tepenize düşsün

Turkey took the best of the S-400 air defense system

Sometimes you need to be able to admit failure in time

Fake news, it’s the best plane in the air with nothing that can compete against it. Forbes reporting on the military is like me reporting on the banking systems of the world. Google it

WolfNW I hope Lockheed got paid. Actually, I don't.

So will they demand a refund?

PilotStef_W

How about we just defund the pentagon along with the police instead.

The lunacy of developing ever more costly weapons will continue until the next costs more than the national GDP - or peoples of competing countries sideline their establishments, demand detente and an end to the arms waste whose only real purpose is lining manufacturers' pockets

Another failed trillion dollar project. This is why we can’t have universal health insurance.

UK should have stuck to harriers and upgraded them, i'd prefer 100's of them rather than the 2 f-35s the same money would buy. and employ 1000s on high wages retainSkills

Right now Putin to those people who mocked them for ditching su-57's (russian counterpart of f-35) development long time ago

That’s disgusting actually, I’ve always wondered about the seemingly unlimited money without auditing that funnels to our military. I have no proof but I’m confident it’s the most wasteful department in Washington

Wonder when the EPA will admit that it wasted billions and never implemented the CWA by ignoring urine in sewage, an oxygen robber and fertilizer for alga! Not intended but because of a faulty test!

Stupid is as Stupid Gets - Forrest Gump. Stupidity breeds Stupidity - rinse, repeat on a 20-25 year cycle of Pork Barrel legislation.

This is where SenateGOP gop wanna waste money, instead of helping the poor. I truly hope that trump destroys the Republican Party, they’re good for no one except the 1%

Buy Sukhoi

Fuck this. Scrap that plane, you don't need a new one. Maybe just stop dropping bombs on people. We could have given out a UBI, made college free, invested in infrastructure..etc, etc...instead we wasted money ona worthless ear machine. This shit has to stop.

rawlimark Who is in the least bit surprised this is a 21st century tub of lard.

Note to Sanders

Rahim_Meghji

It’s not failure when the American tax payers are floating the bill. Most of them don’t really care about how government works anyway. The Turks were smart enough to see that it was going no where and they decided to get the S 400 instead.

Just here trying to connect the dots

I really like F-35 and I think it's great jet BUT GOD DAMN IT IT'S EXPENSIVE AF, like WTF do you even spend so much on thos thing even though you had previously working designs and this one was clearly not one of them

M4A

Oh well. It's only (taxpayer) money!

I was a squadron level instructor when I was in the Air Force. You'd be surprised how tough it was to get halfway decent white board markers that don't dry out within a few days of opening the box. Guess I shoulda been a pilot.

Should have stuck with the F-22

mary_swilling How many hungry kids could have been fed and clothed with the money put into this failed military hardware? I don't want to see a single politician that pushed for this plane saying a damned thing about 'deficit' spending on social programs from now on.

We could have had universal healthcare but the usairforce needed the money to build a plane.....they failed at

Could've told you that 10 years ago. Most groundpounders knew this bird was out of the way.

What a waste.

From SpruceGoose to TitaniumTurkey

RAF_Luton are yours on sale or return?

ראית את זה amsterdamski2 ?

But we have to build something. They have Sukhoi SU-57

Why was it we Danes HAD to have this crap.. instead of buying the much cheaper fighters that already exist (and the US should really take a look at those instead of again developing their own :) snapdragon fighter f.ex. ?

And the F22

To make the money back, sell to UK, they are stupid enough to buy more of them........and I'm British!

In my business if you take money and fail to deliver you get sued.

How did David get all that from the Air Force Magazine article? Quite the opinion piece. They're mostly likely going to end up with a cost effective unmanned drone. One that will complement the F-35/22 and sixth gen fighters.

This is EVERYTHING wrong with America right now summed up in a bow. Can’t give Americans covid relief or raise the minimum wage. But a trillion for a plane that doesn’t work? Fine.

This is why we can't have nice things in this country. US wastes money on military that doesn't work instead of on their people. healthcare HousingForAll

For decades we knew, old news.

I haven't seen anyone mention the 7 TRILLION dollars the military lost but was never investigated.

Perhaps they should look to the latest F-18.

John Boyd's ideas led to the F-15 and F-16 and he had the same problems in the 60's: war planners making the planes try to do too much. Adding sensors and equipment.

Major paywall BS. By

Define “failed.” Was it not stealthy? Did it not fight? Or did it take so long to develop that its technology not keep up with the world?

elonmusk you want to step in here?

The U.S. Air Force admitted that the F-35 stealth fighter has failed

$1 trillion USD down the tubes but $15/hr is a burden......

Oopsie

Don't worry, we have a brand-new next-gen design that will be cheap*, reliable*, easy to maintain* and exceed all mission goals*, we estimate total program will cost no more* than $300 billion. *LOL dumbshits will believe anything if we roll some Top Gun footage

the military industrial complex has failed us all

Not as badly as the US Navy's F-35B. It weighs almost 2 tons more and has 6 tons less fuel than the USAF's F-35A. Range is shortened as well from 1,200 nm to 900 nm. The lift fan needs 29,000 hp (about 1/2 total engine power) to operate.

Maybe if the US wasnt such a piece of shit to every other country it has the power to bully they wouldnt have to rob their citiziens of their hard-earned cash to make more grownup toys

Why are POTUS joebiden SenSchumer SpeakerPelosi are discussing “MeansTesting” and austerity? Clawback 100% of the taxpayers’ money wasted on this and many other boondoggles Enact MedicareForAll and other cost-effective policy THEN we’ll look at other cost cutting proposals

People, we're all going to need Air Superiority for the simple fact that we can't even fix potholes in the roads.

an expensive plowshare

Are we sure it's not just invisible right now?

Trillions of dollars gone to waste but universal healthcare is impossible to afford according to the government

Lockheed and Boeing are currently making advanced versions of the F-15, and F-16 for international customers and the Super Hornet for the Navy. The Air Force and Navy could save themselves billions if they cancelled most F-35 orders and bought the other jets instead.

We fucking said this years ago. They made a movie about this shit, Pentagon Wars. Why come bean counters get to bitch about my five minute lunch break but fail to unwind this nonsense

A bodacious boondoggle.

If only there had been signs before now so we could have used that money for, IDK, giving people healthcare.

1 trillion fucking tax payer program and a bitch never gonna get to ride one of these. How disappointing...

yes but think of the friends we made along the way

Wonder if erinotoole is still lauding the Emperor’s new fighter jet as the US admits the F-35 is a failure.

Well yeah. You can clearly see it.

Lockheed martin engineers going back home after contributing nothing to society and wasting a trillion dollars

in 2019: 'The F-35 initiative is the Defense Department’s most expensive weapons program ever, expected to cost taxpayers more than $1 trillion over its 60-year lifespan.'

hey congrats bwilliamsdc

As if they don’t have tech already 100 years beyond that...we’re all being played

Can the US Army rather buy the 5th generation from Russia and modify it.

Wonder what John Boyd would think if still alive... repeated the earlier mistakes of the F-111 and F-15 (overloading the fighter and weight).

The military industrial complex's undefeated streak of failing us.

Well, better late than never to admit a failure. But any sane person following the news 20y ago could have told you it would be a very expensive failure.

lining the pockets of war racketeers with tax dollars was successful though so we'll call it even

And why did it fail?

chenweihua Must be made-in-China.

Maybe the competition decided to help social media totally rot the mind of the population while capitalism eats itself as fast as it can. Savvy, cheaper than dogfighting. If they don't find the republicans guilty for those cops they killed we live in a slave state.

How is the return policy on those?

I can't hide my satisfaction

ThomasVConti Cardoso kkkkk

What a waste of China’s resources stealing that useless blueprint

No it was not a failure. Goals fully achieved: a huge river of public funds distributed down the MIC corruption chain for the past ten years and cascading for the next ten.

martialonso99 por qué crees que esto no ha afectado a la cotización de Lockheed?

We’re sick.

Throw some more money at it.. 😏

Makes me want to vomit.

It was never supposed to succeed

I love that the crumbling empire is still so obsessed with cold-war thinking that we're willing to bankrupt our entire society to produce these gold-plated pieces of shit, I'm laughing actually

BLM took in 90 million last year. Why are AA still killing each other and so many still poor? Why are the dads still leaving the household? Where is the $$? Joe B? Dems?

Norway spent billions on buying those useless pieces of shit, only because USA promised they would by and use a Norwegian missile system in it. The contract worth 10 million or something. So we spent billions in tax money to help out a Norwegian arms company make a few million

oh hey SimonWhistler something to cover in an upcoming Mega Projects or Side Projects video?

God this country is so stupid

Money well spent

Who didn't know that?👀

The question is where does this leave the Nato nations who signed up to the programme not least for the idea of things like a global spares pool?

Holy crap that's a lot of high speed rail.

You Americans better finish this and deliver a cool jet cuz Belgium ordered some. If u don't, refund or we'll stop sending you beers, waffles & what you fear the most : fries. alexanderdecroo

I remember figuring this out in like 2002 or 2003. It was already a boondoggle even at that point. Too many cooks and trying to make one thing do too many things. The Marines insisting on VTOL alone was enough to sink the project and that was only one of a dozen problems.

Idk these things fly not to far above my house all the time. I live by March afb and if you’re not outside you wouldn’t even notice the triangle flying a few hundred feet above your head. They’re pretty fuckin cool honestly lol

Lmao eat shit

Terrible misconstruing of what the AF is saying. The F-35 is highly successful, better in some areas of the battle space than others (it excels in counter-air, net centric warfare, and high end EW, etc), but its merely good or adequate in a few others.

A colossal waste of taxpayer money! But no money for education or healthcare, eh? Time to stop feeding the military industrial complex.

The military-magic-money-tree-industrial-complex rules - OK? Military & pollution are mere externalities contributing to growth... hurrah for GDP. Corrupt ideology destroy Earth ecosystems

They could have just used drones...

Military acquisition process is horribly broken. shhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooocking!

Arms manufacturers made trillions from American tax payers once again, this was no failure.

All they do is waste our tax money. It's all so tiresome.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

But socialism is the real enemy guys so stay vigilant 🥲🔫

Oh yes this too. It’s is actually insane to even consider direct relief to those in need.

M4A is defense

chenweihua haha look, history repeating itself, another failed american export fighter jet failed? hmmm

chenweihua trillions of US taxpayer money siphoned off by Defence & Pentagon officials...

chenweihua So how could we afford this $1.7T failure? AndrewYang

chenweihua That's a reason to ask Congress for more money

chenweihua Nope

Trillion dollar disaster for the Taxpayer, Billion dollar scam for the industry.

Have they also admitted that its patrons were kleptomaniacal, war mongering psychopaths?

What about those countries that have bought these aircraft 🤨

Those who thought up the F-35 stealth fighter maybe watched too much Star Trek and believe in 'cloaking devices' on the TV show. You can make fighters less visible to radar but what about the heat and noise signature. Stealth may become obsolete like camo on ships did with radar

Should get a refund... fucking defense contractors should be nationalized and we should get the money back.

The F-15EX is the plane. The current F-15 is already a beast. Air superiority, very fast, high level dog fighting capabilities and a good amount of munition. Get more F-15EX in the air.

1.7T invisible indeed

Thanks for my $600...

Welp, MedicareForAll it is. I guess.

can i get a refund?

Tell me again how the USA cannot afford universal healthcare, quality education for all, a living wage, housing for all, and so forth? Budgetary priorities need to be realigned ASAP!

Whoops

Two rules of the aerospace business: 1. Spend at least all the money. ☑️ 2. Don't do it right then first time. They will pay you to fix it. ☑️ corporateGreed

That headline is a stretch. A loooooooong stretch. Do better.

AOC IlhanMN RepEscobar BernieSanders RandPaul Audit and cut military spending.

Yea, but it looks cool!!

President Xi would never allow this

Does that mean the Russian SU-57 defeated the F-35 without firing a shot? DOD should just buy those Saab gripen generation 4+ fighters - reliable, cost/effective, and durable.

jspatwardhan

You can upgrade old computers on new built f16s. Saying otherwise is a lie

F35, when we could just get along with everybody, for free.

imagine how we could’ve used that money to feed, house, medicate, and invest in miilions of Americans and still have some leftovers to go to other social programs

Everyone replying with dumb messages should realize that no where in this article does the USAF admit the F-35 has failed. Just an incredibly misleading headline. My lord, get better.

Swiss army knife of jets is not really great at anything you ask of it.

Pilots were refusing to fly the F 35 because of the constant oxygen problems. That was the number 1 problem, among many, with this aircraft, as explained to me by a recently retired Navy pilot. He's no longer with us, 😥 so I'll leave it at that.

Wow

How many times have we rad this story whether aircraft, helicopters or other high-tech hardware. We are spending away our future for weapons systems that are irrelevant to the threats we face as a nation such as cyber and bioterrorism.

Another wasteful military program. Trillions for jets and $14 billion for a carrier. While ships go to sea undermanned and planes can't fly because they lack spare parts. Whiz bang hardware that can't defeat an enemy that goes to the battlefield on donkeys and in pickup trucks.

Tell me again why we can't afford universal healthcare?

🤷🏾‍♀️

a lot of people are goimg to say 'for the cost of this we could have done X'. but let me remind you, we still can do those things. all of them. right now.

Money for this debacle and this is just one of many, but please tell me again why a minimum wage of $15 an hour is too expensive.

Bring back the A-10

JFC the Pentagon should be shut down

How much is student loan debt again?

Thank god we Indians bought Rafale as our experts anticipated the failure of F35.

Huh. If only someone had sounded the alarm earlier. Like in 2016 perhaps

How much did Pierre Sprey pay you to write this article?

Huh. If only someone had sounded the alarm earlier. Like in 2016 perhaps

Who would have guessed that swapping Ada for C++ was a bad idea [!]

Jet is still potent however yes the delays and issues have increased costs and made it much more expensive than it was envisioned so probably its total procurement gets slashed but it will remain mainstay of USAF in my opinion.

That money should have been used for development of hypersonic nuclear missiles and something similar to Russia’s Status-6

Why not the US destroy this world it once

But... Healthcare

What happened to the f117 stealth fighter?

damn.however,we were going to take democracy tothe world with this plane. We could have killed more children and mom.Let's not build aircraft anymore.Let's create terrorists and seize oil wells inthe Middle East instead. It's less costly.100deaths of children=1oil well.longliveusa

orvaloriginal Gee, I think that's a bit wasteful of taxpayer's money. That's not just a little ooops, that's WTF are you playing at here?

I do not follow Forbes and nobody that I know looked or qt'd this. Why am I seeing this? It didn't say sponsored or anything. I don't give a damn about the US's shitty planes

A cheaper, fatter, slower, less stealthy, larger bomb bay F-22 with a cheaper radar always looked like a more practical solution to me. But they obsessively refused to export their golden raptor.

Big mistake: same performance requirements for (more capable, more numerous) A and B as for (least capable, least numerous) C. C performance determines success/failure by these criteria. So tail wagged dog.

The only fighter jet with a screen door for a window, RIP you beautiful b*stard.

Bring back The Pig.

No, it absolutely succeeded at providing jobs and returns for shareholders.

The military-industrial complex exists not to 'keep America safe' but to 'keep military contractors' investors flush.' This has been true since we started building nuclear weapons.

If only there were things that all that money could have been used on to help literally anyone

screaming hell sounds and a cancer ridden stink Good Morning Taxpayers

U can hear it a mile away 😂😂

Can we stop giving so much money for “defense” and start turning the focus to more on education?

We can’t afford a green new deal. We can’t afford to end student debt. We can’t afford to house the houseless. We can’t afford to have healthcare for all. But when it comes to empire, war, and violence, nobody asks “how are we going to pay for it?”

Did Trump touch it?

I wish someone would give me 1.5 trillion dollars to not work

Hey Remember when the pentagon spent like 1.7 trillion dollars developing and buying en masse a military plane that failed, and then wasted 1.5 dollars on developing and buying en masse a replacement military plane that also failed?

It's not a failure, just expensive. Does what it does extremely well.

Well isn’t this something for 🇨🇦to pay attention to.

The end of WW2 the air craft we had just wouldn't do it so out came the P-51. The rest is history. Keep it simple!

Good article.

Wow. Only about 10 years too late... This jet was supposed to cost 35 million and was going to replace the f-22, which they scrapped (too expensive). Now the F-35 costs more to build than an F-22. It's a good racket if you can get a spot at that particular trough.

jimmy_dore they wasted almost a trillion dollars and still can’t do M4A

But healthcare, student loan forgiveness, relief for people suffering through a pandemic is 'too expensive'. My nation is a fucking embarrassment sometimes.

I suggest they find a new manufacturer and return the money to the Treasury.

Remember the F111, the do averything plane for all of the services that SOD McNamara demanded. How did that work out? This sounds the same to me.

“Failure” is a little too easy to say, and a little too all encompassing. The key points are to know your most probable missions, and to understand the assets of your most probable antagonists - keeping in mind that those conditions are constantly changing. Tricky.

Well, that’s $1,500,000,000,000 flushed down the shitter. 🚽 ✈️ 💰

More waste

What a waste of money. I’m SHOCKED the boomer generals failed

Why does the Air Force hate the A-10? It’s the best aircraft of its type ever built, and the AF keeps trying to replace it with something less capable.

Huge waste of taxpayer money. Who profited?

Glad everyone in the country agreed we wanted them over free housing or healthcare or food in the first place right hahahah!!

Iran pulled off a successful attack on an ISIS convoy a few years ago using 50+ year old F-4 Phantoms they cobbled together from spares. Tell USAF to go do that.

I'm just here to see all the Internet jet engineer comments.

How many families could we have fed with those billions?

That's lovely, and trillions are gone.

The average tax payer paid $12k for this.

I call hypocrisy on the 'shock' to discover a military procurement program wasted money and did not reach the original goal by becoming overly complex, expensive and hard to maintain. That literally is what every single program since the sixties has ended up becoming. And why so

I remember lobbying my then Senator John Edwards about this F 35 20 years ago

1 trillion dollars btw

All that money failed into somebody's pocket though

It only failed by the objective of a 'light low cost fighter'. Scope and objectives changed a long time ago. The F-35 is a major success in advancing air power combat systems.

So... it's visible?

Empire in decline.

This is disinformation

shame

Because I’m not somebody with a lot of money, I just think about how many burritos could be bought for this much. Like imagine the sheer amount of burritos that could go to every doorstep in America for this price.

Boondoggle they call that. $1.5 trillion dollars for the program. We have to stop funding this shit!

This fighter could save American lives. Like 500,000 of them. Wait a minute.

No shit.

Last count they were $90 million each. 3,000 ordered. Lockheed-Martin sure went to the bank this time.

remember when they considered diverting funding from this to restart production on the F22 which actually works

No shit

Imagine if the gov’t had instead invested that money into $BTC. It would have totally erased the National debt and then some, enough to give each American $1 million. APompliano bitcoin

They should buy the SAAB Gripen-E.

So, then, Lockheed is paying back the trillions of dollars they were paid to produce a working product? I mean, that's what would be expected from any other supplier/manufacturer...why not them?

Healthcare plz

Good to know our tax dollars are being flushed down the toilet. When is enough enough?

A lot of people in the replies didn't read past the clickbait tweet and it shows. The Air Force admitted nothing of the sort and are still buying F-35's and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Nice clickbait title 🥰

Why did it fail when UK and EU have purchased many aircraft.

Think of all the people that could have been fed and given healthcare for the money that was thrown away on this project. And it's not even like we needed this -- wars no longer involve jets fighting each other, and drones and cruise missiles are way less expensive.

Replace fighters with small inexpensive drones and be done with it.

No it actually has not.

We don't need manned fighter/attack aircraft anymore. This is corporate welfare for defense contractors and a means to promote more General officers by keeping these acquisition programs alive. Cruise missiles and unmanned drones are all we need and Tomahawks make terrible POW's.

LOLOL

Hmm military budgets are increased annually. Any of the waste from this single project going to be repaid to us tax payers?

Did anyone read the article? They are still using the f 35s but want something cheaper for daily use. 'The f 35 is the ferrari of fighter jets and you don't drive ferraris every day to work'

cushbomb another landis class aircraft proves better guillotine than plane

What a disaster

Nothing big, just the announcement of the failure of the most expensive weapon of all time.

Who on earth could've seen this coming

Wait wait wait. So you produced a plane that sucks and you want money to make ANOTHER here's a shot out of a cannon, buy an upgraded F18 platform just like the growler and make all the branches use it. A fighter variant F18 flying from land would last forever.

Of fucking course it did. An aircraft with three versions, one of which is basically a completely different airplane, touted do all things for all people will end up being none of those things. That and the design as you go philosophy is particularly idiotic.

The F-35 has decapitated it's final pilot. XD XD XD

Ah yes, the legacy of the JSF lives on.

Oh fuck it. There is no comparison to the A10 Warthog. Maybe invest in upgrades there while you're dicking around with the 'F'ailed 35.

*Shocked*

You should have spent all this money on drone defense

Duh.

It sure makes the skies noisy asf in the airspace above Okaloosa County, FL! Shut that crap fighter jet down!

Should have gave McDonald Douglas the contact. Their version used modified existing hardware for landing. The rest was dumped into the body and performance.

Thank you capitalism, imperialism, very cool!

I can't believe that. It's fake news. They've got too many to sell yet, to foreign countries (who will never need to use them anyway)

I hate this fucking country. 1.7 trillion. Trillion. How many people could this have helped? How many people could still be alive right now if they put this money where it belongs? How many schools, hospitals, food banks could this have been far more useful for? Fuck!

I guess this means Canada will walk from its Lockheed F-35 investment. The F35 has been the favorite to replace the RCAF's CF-18 Hornet. Canada's final decision on a replacement plane was expected in 2022 & first deliveries by 2025. Now Canada must start again. Another 10-20 yrs

Nice to see a bunch of folks who don't know the first thing about military aviation weigh in on this. Kinda cute they are taking taking word of a pencil pusher on what the military needs. The f35 was intended to be the most advanced fighter in the world

When are we going to quit letting the military piss all our money away?

Oops

didn’t fail as a vehicle for years of pork enriching a select few individuals and industries

Surely drone technology is good enough to now look at replacing piloted jets

Still an amazing piece of tech!!

Still fighting Boyd's battle, I see.

Maybe the Air Force should get bids for the SAAB fighter. They make reliable cars so maybe their fighters will actually, ya know, FLY. American fighter jet makers are only making money, not airplanes.

False, clickbait headline. Be better.

It's an incredible plane, but it's not without its issues that for sure. The vertical take off system alone would have cost millions to develop. Would have made more sense for the US just to buy Eurofighters as it's a far better jet.

Why can the F22 not replace the F16?

kwest46 But it DOES stop on a dime... 😉

Wow just wow. I’ve always known this but seeing it on Twitter makes it real. smh sippintea

Asher_Wolf Fortunately for US Air Force there’s a WoodDuck LiberalAus member born every day You got a harbour bridge to sell ScottMorrisonMP’s your man auspol

Took them long enough

I wonder if we'd be sitting here talking abt a failed airframe if they'd gone with the Boeing X-32. It's quite possible, but still interesting to ponder.

the thing about the f-35 is that we [everyone in the dod acq comm] knew it was a dud in like...2008, but congress was just 'sunk cost fallacy, let it ride, baybee!'

So who is going to issue tax payers refunds? They used our money.

Failure is strong word. Its higher cost than predicted but given basic increase in dollar it is a lower cost fighter. It has weaknesses and the programme typically became too complex. WTF r they talking about manned fighters for? Low-cost = unmanned. Google: Boeing Loyal Wingman.

But *did* it? Because all the defense contractors got paid out of our tax dollars, so I’m pretty sure the system is working as designed. A functioning airplane was always going to be just a nice bonus.

Damn shit I can do this job! I mean how much they stack on a desk for a story like this to come out and you make a paycheck. Come on man next you’ll tell us about the Trillin dollars the pentagon lost or some other $$ figure is missing. Man ppl out here dying.

Could of raised, trained and armed a Protestant militia to defend the realm for a fraction of that. 2ndAmendment

Failed, just like capitalism...

Meanwhile ImranKhanPTI

Certainly the pork barrel section of the F-35 worked as intended.

jimsciutto barbarastarrcnn I was never big on this fighter jet.. CNN

It hasn’t failed, it’s just not low cost. Stupid title.

Piloted fighters ( and fighter pilots) are obsolete. The next generation of air superiority will be unmanned drones - which can pull turns that would kill a human pilot. The F35 is pure pork, but so will be whatever replaces it.

F35 BTV vtdigger

So it’s not invisible?

Don't forget that 40 years ago, the F-20 Tigershark was supposed to be a low-cost, lower-tech alternative to the F-16 with both air-to-ground and air to air capabilities.

Lawrence Defense Dept get's almost 1 TRILLION A YEAR EVERY YEAR & we are not talking about $100 toilets from forty years ago, we are talking major int'l defense contractor corps pilfering & sucking dry the American taxpayer.

Lawrence Not surprised, when I was active duty they use to pull the one working F-35 into a hanger, change the tail number, then wheel it out to fly, same plane different tail number to make Russia believe we had more than we had working.

Lawrence It doesn't matter. The Defense Dept will replace it with something else that costs twice as much. Gotta keep feeding the machine..

Lawrence

It's almost as though you're better off designing purpose-built aircraft for a fraction of the cost than trying to cram every bit of needed functionality into one outrageously expensive airframe.

The problem isn’t the “military-industrial complex” per se, as much as it’s the system within which MIC sits. The federal acquisition system is based on 1) knowing ALL the requirements a priori; and 2) knowing the cost of the engineering required to produce the entity. Can’t do it

Time to revamp Northrop's F-20?

dan613 When can we expect the re-imbursements?

PRC has copies of this failure, I think

What'll probably happen is that JSF tech will find its way into a new affordable platform. And since R&D is partly paid for..

This is only news in America

If they wanted CALF, they would have just rolled something like the X-32 into production...maybe bigger to have that promised internal stowage.

JSF is less CALF and more JAST

Refund for those gullible NATO allies and others who bought into it?

all you do is look up and you can see it

Oops! We accidentally flushed $1.5 trillion down the pooper. At least Lockheed Martin & friend$ are happily making bank, regardless.

I can’t say I feel sorry for the DOD about this. People of known the F 35 would be a disaster from the drafting paper upward. And the program is shown all the warning signs over it’s 20 years of development. It was doomed to be a dog from its conception onward.

i hate it when my trillion dollar jet fails 😔

It absolutely did not fail, the point was for the contractors to make money, not to make a functioning product. This is the US military, it doesn't have to work, just look good

If only that money had gone to the climate fight

Only person against it was eccentric Trump😜🤣🤣🤣🤣

So when do we get a refund?

the F16 IS NOT 60 YEARS OLD. it came out in 1970's with newest models built in early 1990's block 60 avionics

At least we didn't waste that money on healthcare, or disease research, or quality housing, or living incomes for our military families, or clean energy, or infrastructure, or schools, or...

paper tiger will always fail

Eh, whatever. What could America have used 1.5 trillion dollars on anyway? Infrastructure ? Homelessness ? Funding a pandemic team ? Nah , we good

Waste of taxpayer money

Knew there was a problem when China didn’t build an identical knock off.

Lol

We're still paying billions to make more as we speak.

nihil_cowboi

keep throwing money at it tho

The entire US military budget should be reduced by half

slightly misleading headline no

Turkey and Erdogan must be having the happy dance now since they were spared the cost of failed planes. Does F stand for failure now! Just wondering.

Lol good bye taxes

Why dies this article not mention how much the F-35 program costs? That is also a failure. “The F-35's total ‘life cycle’ cost is estimated at $1.727 trillion in current dollars.”

cool, now take that money and put it into a healthcare system that works.

This is what happens when the Generals are paid off by corporations with consulting jobs in return for agreeing to siphon taxpayers money into forever wars, tech making exaggerated claims, and persecution & torture of whistleblowers warning the people liberty is being destroyed

Sell it to India 😂 They're saying this because they want to move onto the next $1 trillion

I could effortlessly down an F-35 in a Y-Wing. Screw it I'll do it in a T-47, it's only the F-35 lmao it'll probably kill the pilot for me.

lmao holy fucking shit they admitted it you get like four of these for a billion if you're lucky and they admitted it was a fuckup

Haha what as neat way to waste $1,500,000,000,000

During 9-11 when sh-t hit the fan, what plane was scrambled? F-15 Eagles escorted AF1, F-15s flew the boarders, F-15s were immediately scrambled over DC airspace. There is no plane that can compete. When F-22s were introduced into Israel it immediately changed the balance.

Huh, it's like we could've used this money for Healthcare But nope, liberals and conservatives would much rather bomb middle eastern kids than give us Healthcare for all.

Elon Musk said the US military's vaunted F-35 stealth jet 'would have no chance' against a drone remotely piloted by a human.

I didn't see that coming

Nothing like the american government wasting money rather than helping the citizens

glynmoody You could see it coming.

MohsinMD75 شکر ہے ہم نے نہیں خرید لئے

We knew that a trillion dollars ago. They talked about this damn plane when JAG was still making new episodes.

Ok Now tell that to the Iraqis

So, do we get our money back from Lockheed Martin? 🇺🇸

Can we have those trillion dollars back? I heard they knew it was a failure years ago but the revolving door was more important to them than their countrymen or our defense.

This was a trillion and a half dollar failure. This is what a failed state looks like. Considering all the trillions (Over 21) missing from the Pentagon budget I'm starting to think they've been working on something else entirely.

Thank you mmm...?

usairforce people are dying. What the fuck

In the meantime, the USA could simply order some Typhoons to tide them over until Lockheed manages to get a new fighter ready! 😘

Laughs in Russian S-400s 😅

Isn't this literally exactly what happened with the F-22 a few decades ago?

So ScottMorrisonMP can we cancel the order for this hugely expensive, monumental failure yet? The F-35 is a dud and will only get people killed.

Millions of world populace are suffering from malnutrition and food insufficiency, and world leaders were spending millions of budget to develop armament without being sure if success... If that was invested for children secure that will be more astounding.

Back to basics 😌

So it all boils down to one unholy expensive ‘test bed’ which is not capable of fulfilling it’s original design parameters!

Absolute stupidity. This is getting embarrassing. It seems the entire military and government is... 🍄

hey its stealth after all

Drone manufacturers laugh

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone.”

Big inquiry? Top officials & execs being held to the fire? Nah, they all vacationing in pools of cash laughing at everyone.

It didn’t fail Lockheed Martin and those who serve its financial interests. It’s been an awesome success

I wonder how much was funnelled into black projects.

But apparently paying people to just stay the fuck home for a couple of months is completely infeasible.

In what ways?

when do i get my refund

Fuckers.

Well that’s ok, it’s not like we were going to use that money for social welfare or fixing bridges or power grids anyway. Good for them for trying their best.

IMO they should use remaining F-35 budget on F-22’s. Pricy but proven performance. F-35 ‘design changes’ snowballed into a first-class multi-role pipe dream. Why don’t chefs use Swiss Army knives despite need for a knife & can/bottle opener etc? A chef could cut a steak

lol

$1.5 trillion could of feed the entire world for a decade, ending world hunger famine, and death from starvation. But we only know how to kill others with the best technology available, or not so it seems.

Turns out when you build a plane that isn’t as good in the air as the F15 and isn’t as good on the ground as the A10 and isn’t as stealthy as the F22 then you built yourself a trillion dollar piece of shit. Healthcare please.

😂

Why does a fighter need a human inside it anymore?

An expensive failure I am gathering

lol nice.

This is a misleading headline. The F35 is a high performance plan. There is nothing wrong with the plan. The problem is the design process abandoned the original concept, so that original concept continues unfulfilled.

Another toy for killing that didn't work out and billions wasted.

This better be a fucking joke!

ChanelVanHook 🙄

You should have just asked me if I can see it. (I can.) You could have saved $22.5 billion.

Weapons manufacturers about to get their govt. contract on the F-35 taken away.

Classic case of not spending enough money on the jet - they cheaped out

THIS is why you just copy the Russian fighters but put US avionics, radar, and engines in them so you have a DIRT CHEAP non-stealth fighter you can crank out like the Bf.109 fighter from WWII (30,000 units built.) 'Quantity has a Quality all It's Own' -- Lenin.

Can the US Military please just admit they don't need to take the same approach to war machines that i do to PC building?

Can't wait for the military to pay us back those trillions of dollars and help us invest in our lacking infrastructure and social programs.

GrogsGamut Well, duh. I can see it right there in that photo. 🙄

Lion_Heart_64 Make friends not war planes.

It was the inferior of the two designs in the competition going in, WTH do you expect when the conglomerate 'brains' of the DOD get together to make a decision? Politics over progress.

Have you seen the Air Force’s sword? It’s really cool. Here’s a pic! LOOK at that sword! Focus on the sword... Focus on the sword. Focus on the sword.

Timmy_McInnis ?

Didn't see that coming

Good thing we didn't need 1.5 trillion dollars for anything else

Great work, everyone! There's nothing like 'Murican Exceptionalism on display!

Just shoveling money into the MIC instead of doing anything useful with it

If you spent 1 dollar per second since humans first started interbreeding with Neanderthals, you'd have spent as much as this plane cost. YOLO! Amiright usairforce

welp no doubt we’ll be getting all that money back!!!

$400 billion on the F-45. That’s how much we paid for a plane that has failed.

Why are people actually bothered. No one is asking back the 26 trillion dollars NATIONAL DEBT. It’s okay.

America needs to buy its low-end planes from China, just like it buys its low-end everything else.

Waste of money. $10 million stealth drives will do a better job.

Oh no if only that hadn't been predictable as fuck for the longest time

Get_Shortened The low cost, high performance Fighter the US needs:

REZ_777 FFS !

If it hadn't failed we wouldn't be able to see it.

What are the consequences That’s one trillion dollars that didn’t go to the American people

$1.727 trillion

America takes decades to develop a failed plane. And successfully fooled its own military and its allies. Well done.

LOL.

A trillion here, a trillion there, pretty soon you're talking real money.

This has all happened before, and will happen again: 70 years ago Arthur C Clarke’s story “Superiority” told us about the bloating of defense programs … and the ultimate cost:

‘Murica

What is this a picture of? I can't see anything.

If that's so, plenty of countries will are ready to take them off US's hands.

JoeAgneya Just an excuse to garner for more funds?!

Wonder how many bridges and roads this money would have fixed

It is not that simple. The solution is a beefed up Grippen with weight constraints and enhanced radar and hard points

And they said providing affordable healthcare to all was too expensive...

So what’s wrong with the f22?

So stop repeating this mistake

'They got money for wars, but can't feed the poor.'

We knew that all along. $44,000 an hour to operate. Cracks from the artillery. Oxygen starvation. And pilots describe flying it as 'like flying a piano.'

Could've just paid for everyone's education since an educated populace increases the wealth of a country more than a 1.5 trillion dollar unworkable boondoggle.

GrogsGamut Can’t wait for Apple to deliver the F-36...

Just imagine the new roads, bridges and schools all those wasted tax dollars could have built.

GrogsGamut ScottMorrisonMP FYI ... And we know we will have another failure in the future which is the submarine project .. p

CUT in 1/2 the BUDGET....PUMP that money into the US economy. F^%& the DEFENSE CONTRACTORS.

JSF program will resume with another fighter and there’ll be relatively the same amount of conjecture by non aviators. Especially non-NATO interests. An average next gen fighter with a unified NATO Air Force is a threat even if the F-35 isn’t above avg.

has it really failed?

hoje_no

Healthcare, please.

This is news? I thought it failed years ago.

And Congress will still add another 50 to the budget next fiscal year.

Hoosier2012 Of course we can’t afford public services but a trillion on this boondoggle over 50 years is untouchable.

The point is to make greedy people rich, not past tests. America is a big scam.

The last Covid response bill included over $686,000,000.00 exactly for this. 😷

Didnt it fail like 10 years ago?

It wasn't arriving at our destination, it was the friends we made along the way

Can't fly in rain

Still blows my mind they thought the f35 could replace the a10

White Elephant but darling of US Military Industrial Complex, and US Congress members beholden to the same.

Why did MeghanMcCain 's father crash them all? That war criminal literally crashed 4 planes because he used his family name to get to a position he never deserved. JUST LIKE MEGHAN! lmao

Next time y'all waste $1.5 trillion of taxpayer money on weapons of war, at least make sure it fucking works.

Nobody can find it.

Yeah, generally happens when you want 1 model to do literally everything.

It was originally called the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) in the 1980s and morphed into the F-35 after years of redesigns and new catchy names to deceive Congress into believing it was something new. Now it’s just an expensive paperweight.

good thing we spent money on this instead of GOD FORBID LETTING PEOPLE SEE A DOCTOR

Wasted trillions of dollars! They could’ve paid off student debt.

War. Is. A. Racket.

But for the arms industry it was a massive success!

Bruh

Okay let's tax the money back from LockheedMartin

Cool. Glad to know the American Arms Industry scamed the government out of billions on its latest TIE fighter. Now give us Healthcare.

I'm sure if we just keep increasing the military budget year over year, that'll solve it

God I hate it here

The F-35 is the F-111 of its day. When you try to build one plane to serve two (or three?) masters - the result is always a 'camel'.

Why doesn't Lockheed offer the F-22 and F-35 at a lower price. Surely, most of the cost is in the R&D? The more planes they make the overall price per plane must fall? Classic marketing problem, hi price vs hi volume, which brings more revenue & profit? Surely no vol = no $

of course

Gee, I wonder how many folks that money could have help during this pandemic?

😆

omarali50 rajnathsingh DefenceMinIndia goin by these reports from the US about stealth fighters India must work on MWF program more yes we need 5th gen also but we should have atleast 250 300 fleet of MWF.

Idk I'm sure some assholes got rich off of the waste of money, which was the only real goal

U.s. empire is utterly disgusting

Now imagine complaining about wiping out student loan debt

F35 SD (Sitting duck)

Well that sucks, could have ended poverty with that one.

Pentagon leaders have hinted that, as part of the U.S. military’s shift in focus toward peer threats—that is, Russia and China—the Navy and Air Force might get bigger shares of the U.S. military’s roughly $700-billion annual budget. All at the Army’s expense That last sentence

Well better this than medicare for all AM I RIGHT

guessing a computer game could've told ya so.

How many trillions of dollars later?

defund the Pentagon

Cool, can we get some healthcare now please.

You know what would succeed? Forgiving 100% of student debt.

Nice, can i have a refund now ?

Are we sure? Maybe they need to crash another dozen of them to comfirm.

So, can we get a refund?

Is this the invisible one trump was always talking about?

must be cool to live in the only industrialized country to not provide universal healthcare to it's citizens because *checks notes* 'hOw aRE wE GoINg tO pAy foR tHat?'

That only took two decades . . .

$1.5 Trillion

That's an expensive oops. This could have been for our healthcare.

So that's why we've been selling them to our allies instead of using them ourselves

You don't frigging say? Same group that spent 5 billion dollars to make teal camo, give em a trillion dollars, and they make a shiny new disappoint. Waste of money and manpower - that money could have saved *millions* of lives with things like healthcare and other social programs

I never want to hear anybody ask 'how can we afford that?' again. We had enough spare $ to spend 1.5 trillion on a plane that does not work!! We can afford to give all Americans healthcare, food, housing, and education.

A single jet: no problem, all the $$$ you need, literally over a thousand billions, all the money The entirety of student debt: nah can't afford it

holy shit, imagine if America had to rely on F-35s to win a fight

and yet we obliged out allies (Italy as a prime example) to purchase many of these expensive failures (I wonder what MatarellaSergio will have to say about this report?)

This 1.5 trillion dollar failure could’ve solved homelessness in America 75 times over

$1.5T, yes trillion with a T. LOL and we cant get ubi's bc of fails like this.

I could have told you that like half a decade ago

Design 101, if you try to design something that does everything, you will come out with something that doesn't do anything well.

It didn’t fail, it succeeded since the entire point wasn’t to build a plane but to create a jobs program and appease constituents of those who kept supporting it even when it was clearly a boondoggle.
