in Foreign Affairs earlier this month? If you want to know more, supporters of Coons have crafted an informal five-page, bullet-pointed document making the case for why a future President Biden should name him America’s top diplomat.Another Democratic senator, Connecticut’s Chris Murphy, may also be in the mix. He keeps popping up on panels about foreign policy, penning columns on international affairs and pushing bills that put him at odds with President Donald Trump on global issues.
In discussions with various foreign policy observers, POLITICO has heard around 10 names overall, from Foreign Service luminaries such as William Burns to way-outside-the-box picks like Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah. Aside from his personal comfort level, Biden also has to consider other factors, including: Who would face challenges being confirmed by the Senate? Who will constituencies like progressives want for the job? And what about the promises he’s made to have a diverse Cabinet?
In his messaging so far, Coons has cast himself as a bipartisan dealmaker in Biden’s mold — someone willing to reach across the proverbial aisle to craft a foreign policy that appeals to Republicans and Democrats alike. by saying, “It’s dangerous to not talk to your enemies.” Murphy also is the driving force behind legislation — rejected by Trump — that restricts U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which, like Iran, is involved in the Yemen war.titled “How to Make a Progressive Foreign Policy Actually Work.” It was something of a call for humility and pragmatism on both sides of the burgeoning debate between progressives and establishment Democrats over foreign policy.
Murphy’s activities have drawn attention among Biden hands, but the senator’s aides downplay the idea that he’s auditioning for Foggy Bottom. They point out that he’s been talking about foreign policy for years — he co-authored a Foreign Affairs“He is honored to serve the people of Connecticut in the United States Senate, and there’s a lot to be done in his current job to reassert Congress’ role in foreign policy,” said Jamie Geller, a Murphy spokesperson.
nahaltoosi although most of the minorities, and non-Christian majority voted to him I feel that he won't win
My pick would be SamanthaJPower.
Lol....this is beyond desperate.
nahaltoosi Susan Rice, perhaps.
Maybe he will choose a Russian? Or a member of the NVA Army?
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The election is 2 weeks away. Joe Biden has to be elected first. This is no time for complacency. Vote. Vote. Vote.
And Biden going to enrich his SoS like he enriched his son?
Cut this shit out.
Um, hey can you report on Biden’s plans for America. You know, how he proposes to go forward post-trump. Thanks in advance🙏
Let me guess. If he wins it will be the swamp?
All really fine dignified professionals.
BevanCooney says hello and has emails that say the same thing as HunterBidensEmails and if anyone asks mine were legally obtained. But the spineless Liberal MSM are afraid of them. Journalists quit being political activists and do your damn job. Ask JoeBiden what he did.
Chris Murphy would be a great choice for Progressives.
So Biden thinks he can choose Trumps Secretary of State after Trump wins re-election? Strange.
Maybe he should wait till he gets the job…. MAGA2020
I am just glad there are multiple competent people who want to work for Joe Biden. After our current administration, this will be a huge win for America no matter who he picks.
If Anthony Blinken gets the gig, then the Pres, Vice Pres and Sec of State would be Winkin' Blinken and Nod.
Someone without Russian influence would be nice...
‘Reminder ... Workaholic, go-getter Joe Biden’s schedule for the next 3 days ... Two weeks before a US presidential election. Monday ... lid Tuesday ... lid Wednesday ... lid Pitiful.’
Unless you (yes, you reading this) vote for Biden, this will never happen. Get out and
This reporting is not essential, let Biden win then start all your unnecessary speculating.
Nice try Politico...He needs to win election first. Stop trying to put lies out there...Biden hasn’t said a word about who he would have in his Cabinet—as it should be—Biden is not taking anything for granted. He knows he has to win the election first.
Mitt Romney should be in the mix too
Is it an 'open' or 'sealed bid' position?
The best choice to send a message to trumpsters would be to put HillaryClinton in that position.
NO VICTORY LAPS. VOTE TRUMP OUT FIRST. SET THE TABLE AFTER
Perfectly interesting, I’m sure it’s because of the confidence that they have that he will win.
Buttigieg for every post.
This senile old man has to win first before they can tell him who to pick
