in America,” said Jamaal Bowman, a former headmaster, during his victory speech on June 23rd. “At a very young age as a black man in America, you get to learn about death and homicide.” He had just claimed a primary victory over Eliot Engel, who has represented New York’s 16th congressional district for three decades and, as chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is one of the most senior figures in the Democratic Party.
Mr Bowman’s message resonated in one of New York’s poorer districts, which is 60% black or Hispanic. A similar message resonated in the nearby 17th district, where Mondaire Jones, a former prosecutor, is leading a crowded primary race. Assuming Mr Jones wins the general election in November, he would become the first gay black congressman. In the 15th district a third left-winger, Ritchie Torres, could become the first gay black Latino in Congress.
Progressives did not win everywhere, of course. But they showed how far they have come even where they lost.
I cant read the whole story but I can see that this is subscription-based news sites trying to coerce readers in to subscribing.
Congress is going back to Republicans in Trump2.... no doubt about it
Just like the last expansion of the D majority in the House, the takeaways from Red states will obviously be moderates. A bigger D House caucus in 2020 is a more moderate, not left one.
Please be true! We need a new voice as Speaker.
NancyPelosi is a center-right privileged quack.
News cycle moving so fast you all are already thinking about 6 months from now. Stay focused on now.
....you question, can Nancy Pelosi control the new Left...when AOC spreads her wings, it will be hard to reign in the Eagle
You misspelled communists
Again, where are the economics?
We can cross the bridge when we get to it.
The better term is progressive colleagues. They are more progressive.
Huh? Not after ShahidForChange takes her seat
E,
HE president Ghani if Saudi Arabia wants to build hospital is fine but we do not want their Madrasaz for preaching Wahabizm '= Daiyeshizm/ISIS
Let’s win first. Then we can do the usual worrying
Mmm. Think her role changes in November if memory serves.....
Really, ? Election2020 fourmonthstogo
SpeakerPelosi deserves those fruit cakes. She’s the nut!
Nancy better be gone if Dems get control of Congress. Her centrist-right agenda is no longer needed. Time for progress.
She corralled them in 2018, she will do what is needed.
You mean Non-Corporate Democrat colleagues.
Nothing to do with left, centre, or right! White European American power has seen white European Americans prosper over even the natives since first contact. We need continuous black African American power for the next few centuries for Americans of Colour to prosper.
We need party unity to crush the GOP. They better not pull any stupid shit.
Big oof
There will be a new speaker of the house by 2020. She’s agreed to step down.
A wonderful problem to have.
There is no left in the United States. The Dems are centrist and the GOP are center-right to right but mostly bonkers.
You said it right 'The Economist,' 'should they win more seats' I personally would have written, would instead of should, but shouldda, wouldda, couldda...ya' know...
You don’t know Nancy. But she will save us from ourselves one last time and then she gets to rest so you younguns better be thinking who is going to fill those very big shoes
and rightly so!
Especially if Pelosi is voted out. It’d be soooo sweet if her left-wing ex-colleagues were “un-martialed.” To finally enact legislature that’ll actually help working folks for a change instead of Corp, especially during a frickin pandemic! Come on!
News flash.... speaker pelosi isn’t the only one who can do that job.
