Mauritius has declared a state of environmental emergency after a cargo ship leaked oil into its pristine waters. Now, cracks in the ship are growing and officials warn it could split in half — releasing all the remaining oil.

A man scoops oil from the coast of Mauritius on Saturday. A Japanese cargo ship ran aground near Blue Bay Marine Park in late July and began to leak fuel oil and diesel into pristine waters.A Japanese cargo ship struck a reef off the coast of Mauritius more than two weeks ago and has now leaked more than 1,000 metric tons of oil into the pristine waters and unique ecosystems of the island nation.

Mauritius has declared a state of environmental emergency, and the French government has sent technical support to assist with the disaster response. In addition, independently-organized local volunteers have been working to clean up and protect beaches with improvised materials.A crack inside the ship's hull has been growing, and government officials warn the entire ship could split in half, releasing all the oil remaining inside the vessel.

Efforts are underway to pump that oil out of the ship before it breaks apart. As of Tuesday, just over 1,000 metric tons of oil had been pumped out of the ship, while some 1,800 metric tons of fuel oil and diesel remain on board, according to the company that owns the ship. A large patch of leaked oil travels on ocean currents near the Pointe d'Esny in Mauritius on Saturday. The worsening oil spill is polluting the island nation's famous reefs, lagoons and oceans.A large patch of leaked oil travels on ocean currents near the Pointe d'Esny in Mauritius on Saturday. Why is the world not gathering to help this country

AniRenee217 Can we simply surround the ship with some floating barrier to catch most the oil doesnt it sit on top of the water? Then its contained while we clean up?

Very sad

Report the one that happened in Venezuela too

Does anyone know if this tankers and supertankers come equipped with spill mitigation supplies?

NPR’s story didn’t mention why company responsible, or Japan itself, hasn’t triggered massive clean-up efforts like those seen during BP spill? Are the locals like this man (photo) going to be left to contain this situation w/very limited resources & personnel? Time is critical

We needed to stop using fossil fuels yesterday

When are we going to learn?

How sad 😢 my Mauritians

No offense to the people of Mauritius, I understand they are frustrated with their Government but, it is not safe to try to clean up the mess when they should let the people who are trained to do that.

Seems like a job for Flex Paste

I really really hate 2020 😢💔

God...the destruction just never stops. Fossil fuel. WHY are we still using it?

So how about we switch to cleaner energy already?!

This kind of bullshit is part of why Tesla is doing so well, And I hope they continue doing well, Oil is been the demise of the environment for decades.☠️

Defund fossil fuels

Does anyone know the safe word for 2020? If so it's past time...

Think of all the oil spilt in the ocean during WWII. The environment will survive

So sad. What a beautiful place to ruin.

Yet another oil company creating an environmental disaster. Can't imagine why so many people were against a pipeline through pristine land. What else you have for us 2020? We promise to get rid of Dictator Don as soon as we can!

Hoping this gets contained soon.

JAIL
