The Chiefs and Bills played an all-time classic Sunday. It also raised a problematic question for the NFL: Why was one of the most important moments the flip of a coin to determine who got the ball in overtime?

Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen were locked in a duel for the ages Sunday night. They engineered scoring drives in ever shorter amounts of time, until there was no time left. The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills headed to overtime to settle their epic playoff game.

Then the tens of millions of people watching saw how an all-time classic game was decided: by the flip of the coin.

Football requires offense AND defense, both are required and integral to the game - aren’t they? If defense is not a strategy but a chance, then the game is flawed. I am for a 10 minute 5th quarter, and then sudden death quarters, but “offense” rules in OT is garbage.

Good. The NFL should be. College Football solved the overtime problem years ago, with a fair (if a bit wonky) solution. No excuse for the travesty yesterday. ps: I have no particular allegiance to the Buffalo Bills (although they have a great team), I’m just pro fairness.

It wasn't that long ago hat people were complaining that a coin flip was all it was. Then the new rules for OT seemed cool for a little while but last night made the NFL a laughing stock. I'll bet there will be a new rule by next season. Just let 'em play for 15 mins.

The Bills calling 'Tails' at such a pinnacle time was unfortunate.

The COO flip decided the game.

So if my team lost it was the coins fault? It’s just not fair!

CynthiaMLummis Remember when the ref misheard Jerome Bettis and cost the Steelers their game in overtime? NFL overtime rules aren’t fair.

CynthiaMLummis Yeah that's definitely a bulshit rule. How to fix it I don't know but none the less. Also I lost faith in football a couple years back when politics made it onto the field. Bunch of overpaid cry babies.

Coin flip is 50/50 (as fair as it gets) and Bills could have earned a possession, right?

Bill could have held them to 3

Why not? It’s the same at the start of the game.

In GI JOE I think the COBRA group is from Persia.

Nothing to complain about it's been that way a long time, and it's no different than bad calls by the refs leading to the better team losing. However, in this case the Chiefs were the better team orchestrating a beautiful tie and win in OT. Bills you had your chance but blew it.

People forget real quick 2018 AFC championship game. Mahomes never got to touch the ball. Clark Hunt proposed a rule change to OT it was voted down, people didn’t want it.
