an incredible video of crossword champion Simon Anthony completing a “Miracle Sudoku.”If you want to try the puzzle yourself, watch the first part of the video so you know the rules—and thenI’m going to spoil it below the video in order to look at some things about the final grid.)This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The puzzle is called the Miracle Sudoku and it’s made by fellow puzzle legend Mitchell Lee. And here are the special rules: “Any two cells separated by a knight’s move or a king’s move cannot contain the same digit. Any two orthogonally adjacent cells cannot contain consecutive digits.” What’s that mean? Here are two examples of placement, with the combined rules of sudoku itself and the Miracle Sudoku applied. You can see in one case that we can already narrow down the location of the 2 in the adjacent sector to just one of two squares.

“That is quite a big restriction on this grid,” Anthony says in the video. “I suspect this is going to be a short video because he’s trolling me.I’m going to give this five minutes, and then we will probably turn the video off and you’ll never see this. Otherwise this is going to be a work of sublime genius.”Just like in a regular sudoku, Anthony must find the one location where he can begin to fill in numbers.
