As a parent, I want schools to open. As a doctor, I can recommend it as the best course of action.

United States Headlines News

United States Latest News, United States Headlines

As a parent, I selfishly want schools to reopen. I want this mainly so that I can work without the fear of my children interrupting my Zoom calls. As a physician, I think this can not only be done safely, but after reviewing the available evidence, I have come to firmly believe reopening schools is the right course of action, not just for individual kids but for the community as a whole.

Another useful thing to look at is what’s happening in schools that have already reopened. Israel has been facing outbreaks of COVID in schools, but their schools opened up with little or no physical distancing measures in place due to capacity issues. Israel also has poor adherence to mask laws, so what is happening may just be reflecting what is happening in the community more broadly, rather than something specific to school itself.

Worldwide, too, schools protect the vulnerable, especially girls. During the Ebola epidemic, many girls did not return to school after it reopened, and school closures made them vulnerable to sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy. At-risk children who drop out, in the United States or globally, may forever lose the chance for an education and be doomed to a lifetime of poverty. The consequences of school closures worldwide are far-reaching and potentially irreversible.

And I’m a teacher and say FU. My health your frustrations.

this is a very poorly reasoned article; 'we know kids don't get sick much, we don't THINK kids get adults sick much (but don't really know), and the known example of schools reopening in Israel is bad but I think that's unique to them.'

COVID-19 is killing children. Did your doctor that you decided to give a major platform to read about those children or just wanted to spew how much they hated that their children need attention from their parents?

Reposting this again and again I see. So we can't have sporting venues open, the virus is airborne and only half of the students will be allowed in the building at a time. If wishes and buts were cherries and nuts everyday would be a picnic.

Nope.

This keeps popping back up on my feed and is still the dumbest thing I’ve ever read.

No.

What age are “children” in this article? Bc this data appears to be the under 10 data, & drawn primarily from areas that heavily enforced isolation of their population (like Spain). Regardless of vulnerability, kids under 10 probably have the highest compliance rates of any group

Equip teachers with masks and face shields and provide remote learning options or home schooling resources for parents who r not comfortable with in-person class.

The fact that you say you “believe” your children will be ok but ignore the fact that they could share it with you, other family, friends, other friend’s families, the school staff, etc... shows you don’t understand the full picture. What if you’re wrong and your kid gets sick?

WRONG! Kids CAN bring the virus back home to mom & dad & family!!! Try to get your 6 year old to wear a mask for 6 hours straight. Hundreds of doctors just wrote WHO telling them COVID-19 is airborne. Countries have opened schools only to close them because of outbreaks

You got a typo, Slate. “As a doctor I *cannot recommend it” there you go: fixed it, and you’re welcome. 💁🏼‍♀️

*NOT* good enough. 👎👎 Btw, my 7-year-old granddaughter was very ill with it at the end of Feb. Caught from an adult at her school. Shools are full of adults, too! And who wants to risk their child!

as a magazine? you're a COVIDIOT

I too want schools to reopen because I would love to feast

I wouldn't risk it

We have NO idea if there are long term effects from this disease. We know it can cause medium term effects in adults. What if Covid has long term complications!? Should we just expose the kids because they’ll probably be alright? How are you protecting PARENTS?!

Are you fckin kidding me. Where do you people get the idea that TEACHERS are excited to catch Covid, or parents are excited to catch COVID cause everything spreads at Schools. EVERYTHING.

She says that children often expose but rarely infect... but the infections in Israel are a result of a lack of physical distancing and poor adherence to mask laws....so....

Says the doctor who sees one patient at a time. Try 5 classes of 32 kids for an hour each.

Just say you’re tired of your kids and go take a nap. People are so ready to throw teachers to the wind.
