The Israeli Government’s Violence Doesn’t Represent My Judaism

urging the continuation of unconditional aid to Israel, suggesting it is in the best interest of our national security efforts and influence in the Middle East. Some seem to think that to condemn Israel is to condemn Judaism as a whole, which I interpret as a political trick used to protect the special interests of Israel’s nationalist identity.

I feel I’m expected to defend Israel’s right to safety and security, yet remain silent on whether or not Palestinians are afforded the same rights. I am expected to care deeply about Israeli government actions, yet I am not an Israeli citizen nor will I ever be. I am expected to fight against fascism in my own country, yet ignore the ongoing rise of right-wing politics in a country that positions itself as a homeland for my people.

I have learned the importance of resilience, the pursuit of liberation, the abhorrence of oppression, and the sacred task of improving the world. Israel’s current far-right government does not represent the Judaism of this generation, and we have the ability to change the narrative in demanding actualized change in support of Palestine. We cannot settle for lip service from our own legislators.

As I see it, it is immoral to continue to look away from Israel’s entanglement in our identities as American Jews and accept the atrocities committed in the name of our safety. My safety as an American Jew has never been and never will be guaranteed by Palestinian suffering; in fact, my safety is intrinsically tied to the freedom of Palestinians.
