Donald Trump unloaded on his ex-Veep—“desperate to chase his lost relevance”—as he stumps for Gov. Brian Kemp, another Trump-ally-turned-nemesis. Read the latest from theericlutz:

in a recent Fox News poll, the governor has already begun shifting his attention to his general election rematch with Democrat. “Be excited about the momentum, but use that to encourage you even more to leave no doubt on Tuesday,” Kempover the weekend. “And then on Wednesday, we will all unite on the mission to make sure that Stacey Abrams is not going to be our governor or our next president.”

This is not to say Kemp owes his lead to Pence, or that Pence is taking some kind of principled stand against his old boss. The former vice president remains tethered to Trumpism. Georgia Republicans recognize that Kemp is, too, which is perhaps why they appear to overwhelmingly support him, even if Trump himself does not. The two may have been disloyal to the man, but they remain unwavering advocates of his cause—though perhaps in more low-key way.

Might Georgia be the testing ground for Pence’s more genteel form of Trumpism? Perhaps. But it may mean coming more directly into conflict with Trump himself, who dressed down his former running mate through a spokesperson ahead of the upcoming primary. “Mike Pence was set to lose a governor’s race in 2016 before he was plucked up and his political career was salvaged,” Trump spokesman.
