The Fight for $15 is a movement — and it isn't *just* about raising the minimum wage.

just a few months after it took effect.

“I'm not even going to lie to you — [in] St. Louis, we have so much tragedy going on in our city alone. Just being a part of one thing that could possibly change [St. Louis] and [create] something positive, it feels good,” Rush says, reflecting on the movement’s impact on the city. Michael Hebert, 25, is a New Orleans-based fast food worker and leader in the movement who travels to St. Louis to support local actions, tellsthat a wage increase is important but the fight to unionize in the workplace is just as critical. “When it comes to a union, we need scheduling — we need two weeks advanced scheduling. We need maternity for males and females, because a female can have a baby but a male has to be there to help with the baby, especially the first days,” he points out.

Since major fast food corporations like McDonald’s haven’t voluntarily adopted a $15 starting wage and have usedon behalf of workers, the Fight for $15 movement has been leveraging one of the most seasoned labor tactics: strikes. Hebert, Rush, and Ciara have all participated in strikes before. Although they each recall being nervous or skeptical when first faced with the opportunity, all have a very different perspective today.
